What's the difference between SD and SDHC?

While researching some news items, I stumbled across a very interesting site that details the differences between SD and SDHC cards.

This site is Kingston but the info must apply to all brands.

Re: What's the difference between SD and SDHC?

HC = High Capicity, they only tend to work in newer devices.

Not quite, Grasshopper - it is more to do with data transfer rates. Although you are right in saying that there is no backward compatibility.

Re: What's the difference between SD and SDHC?

Hopefully this is an appropriate thread to post my question about SDHC DTR.

I've had a look at the Kingston page, and whilst I understand about Data Transfer Rate, I also understand that buying a card with a higher rate than the camera can deliver is a waste of money. Does any one know the DTR of a Pentax K100D Super? What is the highest class card I need - Class 2, 4 or 6? I want to start experimenting with RAW and want to buy some bigger capacity cards.

Thanks, Steve
