Question What would you miss?

After I moved to Germany I realised that no matter how much I like my new home I still miss things that you simply can’t get here, and that got me wondering…

What things (not family/friends) would you most miss the most from where you are now if you emigrated and it wasn’t available in the new country?

I suppose I better start…

I have on my desk a 3kg box of Lion’s Midget Gems that I recently picked up on a visit back to the UK, that should keep my cravings at bay for a short while The problem is that I can’t stand the liquorish (black) ones so I will end up with about a quarter of a box of sweets that will end up being dumped.

Re: What would you miss?

O.K., where do i start! I live in Spain, and although it's a western European country you can roughly mark it to about 20 years behind Britain in respects to so many things.
The things i miss are....

1. Big DIY centres (i always have odd jobs around the house and am a little fed up with paying over the odds for stuff you simply can't get).
2. Salt and Vinegar Crisps.
3. English Pubs.
4. Central heating (a great invention that seems to have passed Spain by completely).
5. Piped in gas (i know 1 or 2 places in the U.K. have bottled gas delivered, but for Spain it's the whole country and causes a real problem especially for the elderly).
And the list can continue for a little longer, but i'll add every now and then.

I must add there are more things that i don't miss, this is what makes it all worth while.

Re: What would you miss?

Shop opening times, i have never been one to plan in advance and living in England up until 2 years ago i was used to just nipping to the shops, now the shops are shut from 2pm Saturday until 10am Monday. Just thought of this because i needed something and nipped out to see if anyone was enterprising enough to be open....Nope!

But if you are a shop worker I suppose it would fall under the 'how lucky I am to live here' category rather than 'what do I miss'

Re: What would you miss?

Excluding people, the things I wopuld miss are the little things that we take for granted:

Good quality home-made marmelade.... nobody else makes it like our older generation ladies.

Marmite.... hard to buy in a lot of countries and please don't even suggest that disgusting excuse for a replacement: Vegemite!

The stunningly beautiful British countryside (not so little but definitely so wonderful!)

Poole Harbour.... I love going for walks with my beloved wife down by the harbour with its views of Brownsea Island, other small islands, Corfe Castle, the Purbecks, etc.

but I must say how I would LOVE to live in a place where shops close on Saturday afternoons and reopen on Mondays. We have lost the art of having quality family times together in this country, we are always so busy and retail therapy will never be better for us than spending time with loved ones. There are millions in this country who have to work at all these shops because we insist we want to keep on spending 24 hours a day.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: What would you miss?

Hear Hear Rob.....I wouldn't miss the "work until you drop" mentality that we suffer in the UK.

Re: What would you miss?

I'm with the dragon, I'd miss the weather! Hitched around North America many moons ago and that cured me of wall to wall sun every flippin' day! Never seriously complained since!
