£250, tell me what to buy :)

IT's MY BIRTHDAY!!! Yay >_>
Anyway, today I got £250 or so for my birthday, and I want to spend it on camera gear. So what do I buy? External flash (SB800?), better tripod? monopod? battery pack? Anything else you can think of that would be good? (NO cases, I will buy me another cheap one soon that can fit the sigma on my camera in it, so that is not an issue)

Thanks!!

Jack M

Looking at you gear, I would think that a flash would be a good choice, unless you are finding your lenses are inhibiting any of the shots you take.

Happy Birthday

You can buy me a drink which will leave you £247.00 to spend on camera gear

I would have a think about a decent Tripod.

What about going really wide angle & going for the Sigma 10-20mm lens ?. It's an excellent lens if you want that dramatic look to a shot

Thanks Dave! About the lens, I don't think I'm really in the market for lenses at the moment, seeing as the Sigma was part of my birthday present. I suppose I could look at it, but I think I might need to expand my basic gear before going down a particular spending line. I think it looks llike to SB800 is what I'm going to go for.
Can you use it off camera without some special cables + what not?

Thanks,

JM

Re: £250, tell me what to buy :)

You should be able to use it off camera with a dedicated lead. This would retain some camera control of the flash, exactly how much is dependant on the camera and the flash unit.

There is also the optical slave trigger that can offer more flexiblity, but at the cost of having to sort out exposure and flash power yourself. These triggers can be had for about £10- £15.

Re: £250, tell me what to buy :)

I think with the D50 you will need a lead and the Nikon one is a lot of money for what it is but it makes all the difference and will work with the whole system so is potentially future proof. The SB600 is an alternative if budget gets tight but the 800 is worth the extra.

As to what you buy it depends on your photography, the 10-20 is great for landscapes and would round out your outfit.

A macro lens can also be used for portraits and adds a whole new dimension.

Still good to have to make decisions like this. Happy birthday.

Re: £250, tell me what to buy :)

the sb800 (not so sure abt the sb600) has a su4 mode which is basically an in-built optical slave trigger - so you don't need to buy one

I'm not sure you can ever have too many lenses so I would suggest a wide angle lens but if you don't do landscapes not much point
