Re: 40D Picture style

i have 40d and i'm using standard set for all photos i take. but i'm trying to use RAW as much as i can - you could edit every single parameter on your computer then. it works very well when using this software suplied with the camera.

my advice is - try RAW with all settings neutral/standard and then look what you can do in software. you'll like it.

Re: 40D Picture style

I've recently gone from shooting RAW back to JPEG. Shock horror.
The reason for this is that the Picture mode thingys in the D300 are so good, that I would rather get it right in cam, and cut down my workflow by about 2 hours! If you get the in camera settings right then you can get some brilliant results

Re: 40D Picture style

Sorry I can't help Ray, my 40D has been set to shoot RAW since I got it, I've never even tried the Jpeg styles.

that's why it's worth spending some time doing tests and evaluating. Sort of like batch processing, but done beforehand!

Your camera settings are recorded in the exif of your raw files. Therfor the settings you use can be reproduced with NEFs.

Even better, you can change settings AFTER shooting to test which ones might have been better in that situation.

I know that, but pretty much only the manufacturer's software (in this case Capture NX) lets you keep these settings, and I'm talking about controlling workflow, and saving disk space. Shooting NEFs leaves me an extra stage when saving for web etc. in PS, and takes up over twice the amount of space on my HD.
I wouldn't have argued this until the D300 with it's great JPEGs. I was a stoic RAW shooter...

EDIT: Ray your edit seems to have brought some life to the shot, although you've lost a bit of detail in the very darkest areas. Good PPing though, it pops now

Re: 40D Picture style

I am rather interested in your reply Jack. I have been waiting for the Lumix FX500 for a while now, to replace my powershot A640. It has now appeared and without raw shooting facilities so I scrapped the idea. Perhaps I should rethink!

Re: 40D Picture style

Ah. Now the thing is, while I'd recommend the D300's JPEGs, that is not to say that all camera's shoot good JPEGs. Plus, I wouldn't like not to have the option of shooting RAW, and when I get more memory I may well go back to it, or shoot RAW + JPEG.
I don't think it's worth buying a serious camera that doesn't have RAW facilities, it's almost a contradiction in terms.
