Question Advice on Display for selling pics pls.

Our local music fest Solfest is on at the end of August. One of the staff at work has a stall there selling her husband's metal handywork, iron gates, wood-burning stoves etc. She left a note for me today asking if I would like to display and sell my photographs on the stall. I will take her up on this but would welcome advice on displaying/selling pictures in these circumstances.

Thanks
Roger

Re: Advice on Display for selling pics pls.

if your selling your prints of ladscapes etc, i would decide on size, mount them, put a limit number on them, sign each one, and wrap them, cheap wrap bags on ebay, they look good and if you limit them 1/75 for example, and i wouldnt go beyond that, people feel they are getting something a little special. be careful with price too, if you are doing a 16x12 mounted print try and keep it under £35, hopefully you should sell a few, also price your better images a little more, and put your contact details on the back of mount, you may get repeat business. good luck

Indoors or outdoors?

Weather?

It's a tricky one because most photos look better in a decent mount and frame, but the frame can cost a lot and card mounts aren't cheap if done properly. How are you printing them? You may be able to print with a suitable border that looks a bit like a mount, and leave it to the buyer to mount/frame it to their taste.

Just an idea.

Re: Advice on Display for selling pics pls.

Do you actually print a batch of each photo to sell there + then, or do you take orders + then print/mount however many have been ordered?

Re: Advice on Display for selling pics pls.

Thanks Silkstone. Under canvas/large tent for this so relatively dry. I had thought about a few on display as large prints to draw the eye and the rest as A4 prints to give people a chance to see all our work that we consider worth showing.

Charlotte you have hit the nail on the head. Printing off a relatively large batch and then finding that none of them were the right size that people wanted would be a problem. I would rather take orders and post them on.

I am in the very early stages of setting up a website on Photium so will also point people towards this.

I also plan to take a lot of photos at the festival so possible potential to sell after the event. Am trying to get a photo pass and that looks promising after a long chat with one of the organisers in't pub last night.

Make sure you take plenty of business cards with your web address and well done for going with Photium. I've been with them for just over 2 years now, brilliant service.

Thanks Whipspeed.
An old thread set me on to Photium and it was your recommendation that swung it. The feedback and response to queries has been fantastic. That guy Will must never sleep.

Re: Advice on Display for selling pics pls.

Yeah and it's still happening - this story was posted recently on another forum -

I was branded a pervert for taking this snap of my kids
DAD'S FURY AT SLUR
By Rod Chaytor 16/07/2008

Dad Gary Crutchley thought it would be nice to take pictures of his sons having fun on a slide.
But his innocent snaps caused a furious row with staff and another parent - who called him a pervert.
First, a woman running the fairground slide tried to stop him from taking photos of his two youngest children Cory, seven, and Miles, five.
Then, other families waiting in the queue also demanded he stop.
Mr Crutchley, 39, who claimed he had only taken snaps of his own children, said: "A woman said I could be taking pictures of any child to put on the internet and called me a pervert. It was sheer madness.
"We left. Two police officers confirmed that I had been perfectly within my rights to take photographs of my own children in the park."
The Walsall dad added: "What is the world coming to? This parental paranoia is getting out of hand."
Mr Crutchley's wife Tracey, who was with him, said: "I was annoyed, upset and embarrassed."
Malcolm Gwinnett, whose daughter was running the attraction at the Wolverhampton City Show, said: "Our policy is to ask people taking photos whether they have children on the slide. If they do, then that is fine.
"But another customer took exception and an argument developed."
It's madness. This parental paranoia is now out of hand
