Advice on Football Photography Needed

Hello.. I have cut and paste the following from another forum. Its my post but I didnt want to type it all out again if I didnt need to!!

I recently contacted my local football team asking if I could photograph them for my University Newspaper. I added that they would be welcome to use a selection of images from each game for promotional purposes, etc as long as I was credited as the photographer.

They have got back to me stating that they were interested and, for the sake of a business proposal, what my proposed payment levels were.

I wasnt expecting this but am yet to reply as I am unsure what to say. The side in question are a League One side so I am assuming not short of cash!
I was just wondering if anyone out there has had any experience in this and what an acceptable rate would be.

I realise I may get people asking me how much my time is worth and what value do I put on my own work, but all I am really asking is is there an industry "standard" as I dont want to lose this opportunity by asking too much yet I dont want to pass up on getting paid!!

Help Appreciated!!!

Nice opportunity Gary Bagshaw has done a series of tutorials on going pro, the first one can be found here. It covers a lot which will not apply but there are some good bits on pricing etc. HTH.

Are we talking the league below Championship? if so your biggest problem is going to be lenses i have looked at your camera gear and your longest is 200mm which will only be long enough if you are near the goals because you will be behind the hoardings can't block sponsors advertising but this is where all the regular togs will be so you could be on the side lines, do you know anyone with a 300mm or 400mm, 400mmF2.8L is the norm for football also you will need i think 5 Million liability

My gear was a worry to be honest as even if i put a 1.4x or 2x teleconvertor on, I will lose loads of light with the reduction in aperture.
If worse comes to the worse i can borrow equipment from uni (but its Nikon!!!). I was planning to see what lenses etc they had anyway, I am pretty sure they can cover 300mm at 2.8.
In terms of liability, Uni says I am covered by them! but i want to look into insurance etc from a personal viewpoint.

The 70-200 works great with the 1.4x but i would never put a 2x on a zoom only a prime
