Advice needed for new lens

Hello there
My husband has had a Nikon camera 18-55mm lens for years now and is keen to get a new lens. We would like to take photos further away. I'd like to get him one for Christmas as a surprise. Can you tell me what lens I should buy? And also, is there a place on this site where people might be selling the lens I need second hand? I have read some of your other posts but I don't understand if a different brand lens would fit our camera. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Advice needed for new lens

Hi there

You don't say what camera body he has so...

As a long time Nikon shooter I'd recommend the Niko 70-300mm VR - it's a great bit of kit and will work on any Nikon Digital SLR.

Here's a used one from a trusted dealer...

I can second this recommendation. I own the lens, and have taken some excellent photos using it.. Get the VR model, not the 70-300 without. Totally different lens..

Welcome to Pixalo Connolly

I'd agree with -Oy-. The Nikkor (Nikon) 70-300 vr is a good lens. Third party makes are Tamron and Sigma. You just have to ensure it has a Nikon mount. Sigma lenses with an APO designation are better quality and are a bit dearer. if you can get a Nikkor 70-300 AF-S you can't go wrong.

To give you a price guide:

In the UK the Nikkor can be bought new for 419 at WEX, Calumet, Currys and some other outlets.

The Sigma is 199 from Ffordes + about 10 postage, 239.99 from the Camera Centre and 352 from Amazon.

The Tamron is 239 from Amazon, Jessops, WEX and Calumet.

A used Nikkor is probably the best value though.

Used lenses can be got at MPB as said, Ffordes, London Camera Exchange (LCE) and others.

If you buy from a dealer you will get a warranty and they will not sell lenses that have faults, but some might have cosmetic flaws such as marks or scratched on the body that will not affect performance. The description will show the condition.

We do have a classifieds section

But I don't recall a 70-300 in there recently.

One word of warning though. Some Nikon cameras do not have a focus motor in the camera and will only autofocus if the lens has a focus motor. Most modern lenses will have this, but some older ones - particularly the third party ones - do not, so if you are buying used, this is something to watch out for. Nikkor lenses have an AF-S designation if the lens has a focus motor, and 'D' lenses don't.

Re: Advice needed for new lens

Thank you Everything you've all said is very helpful. Another question - how do I find out what mount my camera has? Is it written somewhere on the camera because I can't see it anywhere???

Re: Advice needed for new lens

Hello and welcome to Pixalo.

You have given a Nikon D3000 in your kit, so I will assume that it is the camera you are referring to. It is suited for AF-S lenses only. As Dabhand has already pointed out, there are 3rd party makes as well, but here you have to see that the lens is suitable.

Nikon have kept the mount of their SLR cameras physically the same for over 50 years with only 4 major differences which are based around how the lens communicates with the camera. You will be limited to the later type of automatic focusing (AF-S) lenses for the Nikon D3000. As mentioned by -Oy- the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G IF ED VR is a very good lens. It is comparable with the manual focus 80-200mm zoom for its lighter weight which make it quite popular and therefore not often found 2nd hand.

Be aware that there are 2 models of the Nikon 70-300 lens to be found in the 2nd hand shops. The other sells for around 70 to 100 or so and is not as good as the above lens. If buying 2nd hand make sure it is boxed with everything - lens caps, lens hood and manual. Like this it commands a higher price but will be better for a present.

Re: Advice needed for new lens

Just one more thing. With this focal length lens is is best to get one that is stabilised. Nikon (NIkkor) lenses are designated vr, Sigma lenses OS and Tamron VC.

So the Nikkor that -Oy- linked to looks perfect unless you want a new one.

Re: Advice needed for new lens

I bought the second hand Nikkor 70-300 VR from MPB and can highly recommend it! I also thought that it was very reasonably priced as well.
