Advice on selling

I've been thinking more and more about trying to get some of my pictures put there for people to see/and or buy. I get really nervous about it though because I don't know if they are any good or not. I was also wondering if anyone actually does sell their pictures and if they do, how do you know when you're ready to start selling? And how do you sell them? I don't want to do it online, but I don't know where else to sell. We don't have any local galleries around either. Just wanted to see if people could give me some input, advice, recommendations etc.
Thank you very much

Re: Advice on selling

If you want to sell pictures I think that they should be mounted in order to display them at their best, and perhaps framed as well. You then need to build up a stock of mounted pictures to sell and maybe look at attending craft fairs as a seller. Maybe a local cafe or bar will display them for you, or if you have an art shop nearby maybe they will display them.

If you want to sell pictures they should be mounted and framed then hung in a shop or gallery somewhere, when they can be viewed at their best, fine art prints can do well but they have to be good!

Re: Advice on selling

I used to sell pictures many years ago. It was in a café in a well known tourist spot. They were A4 framed and mounted the only ones that would sell were of that particular local area. I forget what the actual terms were but they took a small commission. I did it for a couple of years and then the place was burgled and all the pictures stolen, so I never bothered again. Then I had a shop in another town selling pictures of their area and they sold quite a few but I had so much trouble trying to get my money that I stopped supplying them. Now I don't bother I just do my own thing for fun and enjoyment.

Re: Advice on selling

I would say the simplest way to know if you are ready is to look at your work and be really self critical, take a step back and think, would I buy this.

Re: Advice on selling

Have you thought about selling your pictures on a website that is dedicated to picture selling.
I put a few of my pictures on picturenation.co.uk its worth a look and who knows some of the other pictures may inspire you and take you in other directions with your photos

good luck & best wishes

Re: Advice on selling

With picturenation, what stops people from just copying or downloading the photo straight from the website?
