AF question on 40D vs D200

On the D200 I have been used to following AF- Area modes
  • Single-area AF - defaults to centre position, but user can change
  • Dynamic-area AF
  • Group dynamic AF
  • Dynamic area AF with closest subject priority

Question is, does the 40D have anything similar to this ? I can see how to manually change focus positions across the points, but couldn't find anything in manual, or menus to go beyond this

2nd question is, for portrait shoots I switch D200 to Single-area AF & as it defaults to centre position, I've adapted my shooting to lock focus on the eyes & then compose shot & shoot. Is it possible to set 40D up the same without having to drop in to a menu or adjust focus point each time, to set position ? I found by default it was selecting numerous positions & found a few eye shots out of focus.

I'm sure it's there somewhere, just need a Canon bod to help out

Re: AF question on 40D vs D200

Not sure if anything has changed on the 40D, but on the 30D you can select individual AF points or let the camera choose which point(s) to use, which I guess is similar to 'dynamic' on the D200. You can't select a group of points and let it choose from those alone. There's also the A-DEP mode which I'm sure someone finds useful.

Most people set it to use the centre AF point by default. There is a custom function setting that lets you use the little joystick thingy to change the AF point, and if you press the joystick it returns to the centre point. That's very handy.

I'm willing to make you a reasonable offer, when the time comes.

It's the switch on the lens - slide it from AF to MF. Problem solved!

Re: AF question on 40D vs D200

Dave - when you are holding the camera to your face there is a button under your right thumb on the back of the camera. Press that and you can then use either the main or back scroll control to select the focus point you want. Once you get used to it I find it pretty quick to select the specific point I want or to switch the camera to 'auto'.

I'm surprised you didn't pick this up from the manual so maybe I am telling you something you already know and have missed the point slightly.

Re: AF question on 40D vs D200

Tx for advice. I could see how to move focus points, I just wanted to make sure if I chose centre position it stayed there between power off/ on of camera. From your suggestions I have found if I press the joystick it flicks between centre AF point & all points on. Works for me.... I think
