Amature or PRO

Hi Everyone,

I have been looking through the site and there are a lot of posts that talk about Amatures and Pros, this is a question askedobviously by an amature but can anyone tell me what the difference between the two is??
Does it just come down to the amount of experience?? I only ask because in some of the posts i have read the advice vsries so much that it is hard to tell what to listen to and do any of them have qualifications??

Re: Amature or PRO

My answer would be that technically a pro is someone who derives all, or a significant part, of their income from that profession, in this case photography; a semi-pro, someone who regularly charges for their services; a serious amateur might ocasionally derive income and an amateur rarely

Some pros do have qualifications but most probably don't (and in my experience the best pros definitely don't!)

Re: Amature or PRO

I agree a that a professional is defined as someone who earns their income from photography. This is not necessarily a measure of expertise in photography. A professional is running a business and a successful professional photographer I know told me that he could hire photographers easily but the skill is making money from the business. Some amateurs are very skilled in photography but may not know how to run a photography business which is why so many amateurs fail when starting a new photography business.

Re: Amature or PRO

The only thing I'd add is that if a hobby becomes a job it can lose its appeal. What you used to do for fun becomes an obligation. Maybe you'll still enjoy it, but there's suddenly a 'need' element rather than just a 'want'.

So if you really enjoy photography as an (unpaid) amateur and can happily earn a living elsewhere, I wouldn't rush into mixing business with pleasure.

Wouldn't the correct term be semi-pro?

You are right being paid for something you love doing spoils it a bit, I hated being told what the customer wants but its nice when the cutomer walks away happy with a good set of pictures!

I think you have to earn 51 percent of your earnings to be called a pro

I told someone once that I was semi-pro because sometimes the half naked woman gives me the twenty...
