Another macro question.

Thanx for the help the last time with the focus rail, theres just another thing i have to ask about it, would i need to bother with the 4 way rail one as the tripod i have manfrotto xprob has the centre columb which comes out to extend sideways & down low to, so am thinking that the 2 rail one should be enough..

Re: Another macro question.

4 way is very useful for micro adjustments left to right and vice versa, but not essential for focusing.

Re: Another macro question.

I think if you're going to have a focus rail it's worth going all the way and going for a 4-way. Having said that, was out with the MP-e 65mm yesterday (first outing!) and found using just my tripod was OK (rail not turned up yet), so will use a rail less than I thought and not at all with the 105mm & 150mm macros

Re: Another macro question.

Rail now arrived - this is the one I've got Macro Focusing Rail Slider for Sony Pentax DSLR/SLR on eBay (end time 01-Mar-10 07:55:58 GMT) - and only £30.00 all in!

Tried it out with the MP-e 65mm macro and have to say it's absolutely perfect! Tripod needs to be stable (the biggest source of potential wobble - especially as I've put it on a Quick Release plate in order to use my tripod head to allow full flexibility of comp) and I've even found it works well with my macro flash attached to the MP-e 65mm

Whilst the focus rail is easily the most used, the horizontal shift is useful for minor lateral adjustments

I'll see if I can't post some shots later
