Anyone been to Cuba??

I go to Cuba next week and am undecided as to whether I take my camera or just take a point and shoot. It's insured but it's just the hassle if it gets stolen. Anyone any thoughts?

Re: Anyone been to Cuba??

I've not been, but some good friends of ours went about three years ago. There are loads of photographic opportunities and the locals are generally friendly and law-abiding. You'll see plenty of Canadians and Europeans, but very few from the US unless they've flown via Mexico or Canada.

I'd definitely take a decent camera. Don't expect 5-star luxury, especially now as the recession has hit Cuba quite hard. If you'd like more detail, I can put you in touch with the people who went - just PM me your e-mail address.

If you don't take your camera YOU WILL BE SORRY ! going to Cuba is like going back in time, back to the 50's and 60's
people are friendly, but just like any other place you have to take the usual precautions.
people love to pose for you remember that dollars take you a long way in Cuba.
be sure to take some candy, cigarettes, and little things like that are worth more than money there.

I would love to see your images when you come back!

1 Cuban Peso = about 1.50 (GBP)

Re: Anyone been to Cuba??

Went a few years ago when the flight was an experience in itself (Illuyshin converted bomber) as no one apart from Cubana airlines was flying direct (last time I had landed in Gander to refuel was in the 70s!). Lovely photo opps, great people (apart from a few capitalists operating in the black market who were downright sinister!) - don't just sit in a resort!

Re: Anyone been to Cuba??

I went last year and I would say you will be hard pressed to find a safer place to take a holiday. Possibly the Scilley Isles may come close.
Havana is a wonderful colourful place and for a more rustic basic town, Santiago De Cuba lends itself also for some interesting shots.
Going out in the evening is no problem either in Havana, security is good without being obtrusive.
Take your best camera and lens and any other pocket one as well.
Have a very nice holiday and show us some shots when you return.

Re: Anyone been to Cuba??

I second everything already said.

Be careful to show respect for the national flag and ALL officials. If you want to photograph anything at the airport or where you will include anything military - ask first. You are not likely to be refused but going ahead without permission may be met with a please delete request.

If you really want to make friends there are some things you can do.
Learn a few words of spanish - please, thankyou, two beers etc.
If somebody wants to practice their english, take a few minutes to do so.

Cubans play a lot of football, take a few Tee shirts with UK footy club badges on and be prepared to give them away when anybody is particularly helpful.

If somebody buys you a beer the correct response (apart from buying one for him) is raise your glass to him and say - Salud, amor y dinero which translates as health, love and money. They will reply with - tiempo para gastarlas which translates as time to enjoy them.

have fun.

Re: Anyone been to Cuba??

Thanks guys for that one. I will take my camera (Nikon D3) and probably just the one lens, 24-70mm f2.8 as I want to travel light.
