Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

Hi

I was wandering if anyone knew if i could mention my rivals prices on my website. I often see tesco showing asda prices and saying theres is cheaper, even banks do it im sure you have all seen it before but is it legal/ok.

Its just that i can supply 360º virtual tours for business's and have just found out that a large company sell them for £300 +vat, i can supply them for free.

Would it be ok to mention this

Free You must charge something or people will look for a catch and you are doing yourself out of earnings!

Sorry I can't answer your question but it might be worth a call to your solicitor.

Of course you can mention the company name and price! Reason you don't find it more often is that if a price changes........ Even then, providing you changed the displayed price upon request they couldn't do much

Doing it for free is simply depriving a professional out of their living! How would you like someone to do that to you?

Agree with Les & Gary, why would you give your hard work away for free, by all means, price competatively, but with people giving photographs away for free, it does make it very hard for anyone trying to make a living or part time job from photography as clients don't place any value on your work.
I wouldn't place the competitions price on my website, I'd scan round and work out my price & just put that on, I never like to see adverts with we're cheaper than they are in.

Its tough in business

The reason why its for free is they get a free 360º virtual tour when they join for a year. I charge less for a years advertising than ALL my rivals and give them a free virtual tour whereas they charge £300 extra for a virtual tour.

Thanks for (some) of your answers

I think the question is not is it legal is it ethical is more to the point. Are you in fact offering some thing free when it is conditional that they buy advertising.
Have you properly assessed the overheads of your operation.if your rivals are so much more expensive Ask yourself why?
Downgrading photography is not going to help you or anyone else.

Re: Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

Without trying to stir this up I really don't see what the issue is.

Dave's providing a service package at a better price than his competitors, he may present that package slightly differently than the other organisation but it's still a standard business practice as far as I see it... and the notion that he's taking money away from a professional isn't really fair IMO, he's doing the same job as this other professional so surely it makes Dave a professional in this area aswell?

Re: Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

I think the 'problem' is that Dave said he was doing something for free when he is actually providing that particular service as part of a 'package'. He seems to also want to market it in a less than transparent way by advertising it as free while his competitors are displaying the price for that service.

As he says it's all business and he can chose to advertise and market his the way he wants

Nothing is free in this life, if the advertising is free then the 360 tour is free, Thats the trouble with advertising these days vunerable people get sucked in

Re: Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

Davetherave i really dont think you could add a competitors prices on your site because its not a like for like comparison they offer a 360 tour for a set price where as yours is on condition of an advertising deal, i think you could fall foul of the trade discriptions act on that one!!

You could however state what YOU would charge if you where to offer it as a stand alone service and incorporate that into your advertising but leave competitors out of the loop, i'm sure anyone interested in taking up your 360 tour offer would be well aware of the market rates for such a service.

"Advertise with me and I'll throw in a 360 pano for free - something which xyz ltd charge £300"

I see nothing wrong with that statement!

Re: Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

I wouldn't do direct or exact price comparisons myself but something like "we offer extremely competitive prices compared to others" would probably do the trick.

Going slightly OT, I've just started creating 360's www. mikeanton.com/Interactive%20Panoramics here, if you're interested. I'm only really doing them for fun atm and would probably give the Bluebell Railway theirs.

My rationale? We'll they're largely run by volunteers and are a charity. They've been very obliging so far so I don't really want to take the mick. Granted this isn't a sound business approach but in light of your comments to Dave, what do folk think of this?

Oh and Dave, that's a nice set of 360's you've got there

Edit: - sorry Mike - link broken as we do not allow links to personal sites in posts. You can include it in your signature and add it to the members web-site section.

Re: Anyone familiar with advertising rules? kinda photography related

Many years ago, when studying pro photo at college, I read a book written by a very successful photographer on how to run a successful studio. His golden rule was this:

"Either do the job for the market rate OR do it for nothing. Anything else will cause you problems."

I have never forgotten this maxim and it has stood me in good stead.
