Aperture confusion

Hi all (maybe again ?)
Not sure if I managed to post to the forum ashort while ago - so another attempt just in case.

I have just bought a canon 400d with 18 - 55 mm kit lens.
On the lens it states the aperture is f/3.5 - 5.6 - but when I select Aperture Priority mode, I get a range of 5 to 32 ?!?!?
Can anybody advise which I should be looking at, and if it's a canon lens suppllied with the camera why are the two ranges different ?

I think I may be missing a trick somewhere - so any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: Aperture confusion

Hi Tony and welcome to Pixalo.

Here's what it all means...

Your lens has a focal length (zoom) range from 18mm to 55mm.
The maximum aperture at 18mm is f/3.5.
The maximum aperture at 55mm is f/5.6.
Anywhere in the zoom range you can set the aperture anywhere between the maximum value and the minimum which is f/32.

I guess you know that the smaller the f-number the larger the aperture. The number itself is the ratio of the focal length to the diameter of the iris.

Hope that helps.

Re: Aperture confusion

One thing to add, which is really just a small tip:

If you set the focal length to 18mm whilst in Aperture Priority mode, then set the aperture to f/3.5, the camera will automatically readjust the aperture to be at its widest, no matter what focal length you use. As Silkstone says, this setting will be f/5.6 at 55mm, but will auto change as you zoom in and out. It's handy to do that if you want to work with maximum aperture without having to worry about adjusting the aperture while you shoot.
