Apple aperture........
Linky
An all RAW ased photo-editor eh? Pity it's $499 so it'll be £499 over here! It sounds like a great concept but the proof will, as always, be in the eating. (no pun intended) |

Yeah I think it can now be done...doesn't help for this application though
![]() Its a interesting concept and I can't help but wonder how long it will be before someone does the same for PC users and one that will cover the mass market user. |

I dunno, Macs are supposed to be infinitely more stable than Windows based systems, but having never used one I couldn't comment. I know a lot of pro's use them so there must be some reason.
TBH I'm surprised no-one has done this yet for windows. I'll be even more surprised if Adobe or Corel or someone aren't far behind on this one. Back on topic.... I'm not sure if it marks a major leap forward, as surely when you save a RAW file as a tiff, it's a lossless compression format, so you wont lose any info, just the ability to alter sharpness exposure etc in a non destructive manner. Editing such as cloning, cropping wont see any gains, surely? If anything it'll be slower due to largewr amounts of data being moved around? |

Macs have rarely been stable in my experience - user friendly (look pretty aswell - but you pay for that

For those of you that that might be interested I've just checked $499 converts to around £283.12 according to the currency converter at http://www.fieba.net.

Well, I'm a Mac user from lots of years now. I have a powerbook G4.
I get a tryout of Aperture and been playing and editing some photos with it. Let me tell you my thoughts about it: • Its a good software, yes. • If you are a experienced user in Photoshop, may be you don't need Aperture. • Aperture, IMHO, it's like some functions of Photoshop with a software to arrange pictures. I use, iView Media Pro + Photoshop CS2, and works very well to me. Aperture is very user friendly (as almost all apple), has a lots of functions and great RAW compatibility, but all the things you can do there, you can do it in PShop. What I like from Aperture: • When you make some adjust to a picture, automatically Aperture duplicates it and works in a new one. Making safer to work and never save over or delete an original file. • Great RAW capabilities. What I do not like: • Aperture makes a "library" archive on your computer, that contains all the info of your photos, including the original ones and the ones you adjust. But this info is only available inside Aperture. I used only 1 file to work on it, and this library archive size is 12MP from a picture that its original RAW size was 8mp. I thought when I make some change on a photo, that Aperture duplicate it and work on the new one. And so far, what it do, is remember what you do to that photo in this library, and doesn't afect the original one. If you want, you can save the New photo in other place. But this library file, continues to grow. After I use Aperture some times this week, I prefer to stay with iView Media Pro + Photoshop CS2 to manage my pictures including RAW ones. I used to see If paying $499 was worth enough. But not for me. May be if you are new to digital photography, with Aperture you can find in a single software all the things you want. Cheers |
