Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

Flipping things

Please help.
I am driving myself insane.

I have been having another (yet another!) go at water drops. As follows:
  • Camera (Canon 40D) mounted on tripod
  • 100mm 2.8 macro lens (Canon) attached
  • Set in Manual
  • - aperture set at 2.8
  • - shutter at 1/250th
  • - ISO 200
  • Shooting in RAW
  • External flash (Canon 430ex) mounted on camera (I don't have a remote cable as yet) and switched on! Thats about it for the flash...
  • Tripod in front of kitchen sink
  • Baking sheet across sink, towel laid across baking sheet and up behind tap
  • Shallow dish with glass placed inside
  • Camera more or less level with the rim of the glass
  • Run slow steady stream from tap to get focus (manual)
  • Glass filled to top
  • Tap turned down to get evenly spaced drips

Apart from the squillion of 'missed the drip' shots (timing!) it's just not happening. There are a couple of passable shots (if you squint - alot):
Straight from camera, saved as .jpg

But the vast majority are way off - focus and otherwise.

This is how I was trying to set the focus (centre AF point) in middle of stream of water roughy in the blue outlined area.

Please help!
From start to finish, step by step instructions that an idiot can follow! What, where and how to focus, what settings, flash setup, positions etc.

I am going to walk the dogs and take some deep breaths... and then try again later

Re: Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

Why are you shooting wide open? Do you really want/need such a small DoF?

I'd try ISO 100 and f/8. The flash should have more than enough power at the distances you're working at.

Catching the right moment is très difficult - someone on another forum built an electronic trigger with a photocell to fire the camera automatically, but otherwise it's a bit hit and miss!

Re: Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

i know the pain your in, you seem to have the same set up as i have but my flash is underneath my camera on a cable, i use f8 and also a shutter speed of 500/1000 you flash will let you do it. maybe try having the camera slightly higher than the glass but only ever so slightly... other than that its just luck and timing trying to actually get the shot just right i would say just sit there and click away take a break then click some more i will be having another go at getting this shot and im determined to get a good un..... not tried the splashing into water just the drop.... good luck

Re: Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

Not tried this myself, but once you have the focus sorted, why not set the camera to a high frame rate? Must make the odds of getting the shot you want shorter.

Graham - the flash probably won't recycle quickly enough.

Yes if set to full power, but for this sort of close work I'd have thought that it would not need that. If it is set to a low power it ought to be able to manage a few in quick succession.

Just a thought though - as I said I've never done it.

Re: Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

I normally shoot drops at around f/11 or higher, you still get plenty of bg blur, due to how close you are, but you're more likely to get them in focus. I'd also get a bit higher and closer to try and avoid getting the rim of the glass / bowl in

Re: Arrrggghhhhhh - Water drops!!

Thanks all - you are such a lovely bunch!

As for why am I shooting wide open? Absolutely no reason at all - using a smaller aperture just hadn't occured to me.
Tomorrow I will have yet another go, this time same set up with f8 or f11 and see what comes about.

However, having walked the dogs, gathered myself together and given myself a good talking to. I did try again, this time with more patience, taking more time, thinking more about what I was doing (apart from the aperture ) and reviewing the shots on computer more often to check focus. It seemed to help. I also found the blue background 'easier' to work with than the red/burgundy affair.

So here two from the later attempt (fished out from about 400 shots!), I'm more pleased with these - but will try again tomorrow with smaller aperture.

Better! I'd still close down a bit, but I'm really liking the backgrounds, nice colours and not distracting
