OK Ive been asked for some sample pics by a pet magazine but it was just that very unself explanitory

Do i send watermarked samples they cant use for an idea of my work in the hope that they will like it enough

or

Do i send a couple of actual pics and just be happy with the fact if they use them and not ask for payment


And if i ask for payment , how much? per pic?

Or do mags not pay per pic is it more a on the pay role thing?

I'll leave it to those who have experience of doing this to advise you, but as a matter of interest, how did the mag get your details?

From what little I know, it is more usual for photographers to be asking mags to publish their photos, not the other way round.

You should expect payment if they are using them, Remember to put all your details in the file info section in PShop, the pay depends on how they are using it, what size and distribution of the magazine.

Off the top of my head (and this is coming from someone who has never dealt with a magazine) I say anything you send should be watermarked, at the very least. I wouldn't bring up money until they do. Since this is your first sale, in general I wouldn't expect you to have a lot of leverage in negotiating, and they probably have guidelines they can't vary much from anyway. If they want to use them for free... well.... That's your call. I believe in people getting paid for their labor, but this might be a case of getting your foot in the door (plus general pride) is good enough.

Now that someone (me) who knows nothing has spoken, go to your library or bookstore and look in a copy of this years "Photographer's Market". They should have your magazine listed, and you can get a feel on the format's and quantity they want, as well as a their policies and pricing. Even if the specific magazine isn't listed, you can compare it to a similar sized one. Plus, if you have photos good enough that they're asking -you-, maybe you should be sending samples to other pet magazines...

I have occasionally submitted pics to Magazines. I did not find it necessary to watermark pctures; I am sure reputable publishers can be trusted. Those that published paid me at a standard rate (you will need to ask them). A front cover is a lot more than an inside picture but you tend to do better if you have a an article published with pictures.

thanks guys, at the minute not very happy all the pics i wanted to use Ive lost as i posted on other thread my hard drive has konked, dont know when Im gonig to have a useable puter again

Well I have the laptop and have purposly done little editing to the images as its not that greatfor that and off they went to the publishers this aft, Now! if anything comes of it is a differnet matter but will cross everything that doesnt cause me to fall over and wait and see
