Question Background difference.

Out taking a few pics this morning of flowers, i wanted to keep the background out of focus with the flower in focus, on a flower head that was slightly wider this wasn't a problem but on the long thin tubular like flower it caused the background to come slightly into focus, both were at f5.6, auto focus on the centre of the head & then refocused in manual, but no matter what i done with the thinner flower the BC was still slightly focused.anyone have any help on this, cheers Simpbow. o i 70-210mm lens.

Re: Background difference.

I would hazard a guess that:
1. The BG was closer in the thinner flower
2. The thinner flower used a smaller zoom than the larger
3. You were closer to the larger flower

Or maybe just one of the above?

Pics, we need pics!

Re: Background difference.

Here's the two shots that i was talking about, haven't had time to do anything to them so turn a blind eye to anything that shouldn't be there.

1. shot 1 - iso200,1/60 sec, f5.6,210mm

2. shot 2 - iso200,1/40 sec, f5.6, 210mm.

In no2 shot something else isn't right either, the focus was meant to be on the lower R/H flower but for some reason it is not as sharp as the one above it to the L/H/S, the difference in distance from the 1 shot - 2 shot is 8", i moved slightly forward for this but camera wouldn't focus on the flower so i had to move back very slightly till it did.

Re: Background difference.

At first glance it looks like the BG in #1 is further away from the subject and so is outside the depth of field.

Re: Background difference.

Right know what your saying Graham, so why then did the background not go as blurred on 2 shot & the focus is sharper on the middle flower instead of the lowest one [shot 2]?

Re: Background difference.

Difference in BG blur is down to proportions of distance from lens to subject vs lens to BG. As lens is much closer to subject in #1 and BG is relatively far behind, it is blurred

Think the difference in focus of flowers is done to just that: focus was more on the sharper one

Re: Background difference.

Got yous, in 2nd image no matter what i done the BC wouldn't turn blurred with the flower in focus but with the flower out of focus the background then went blurred, so would i be right in saying another way round this would be to take the out of focus image & merge it with the in-focus image.?

Re: Background difference.

Dread the thought..................................

But some people farm a shot (get rid of stuff not wanted in the shot)

pull the thin un forward, and cut off anything in front..............

Re: Background difference.

Blend the two images? You'd be better off (well, a damn sight easier anyway! ) looking for an example where you can have the closeup flower in focus and the BG is sufficiently far enough back!
