Backing up from camera to iPod?

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the iPod as an external device to store photos from your camera on? For example if I am out shooting and run out of space on my CF's can I connect the camera to my iPod and get the RAW's into it therefore allowing me to reuse the same card?

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

I'm pretty sure you can't - but I don't have an iPod. You can get portable storage devices which will download files from your card, but I don't know of any that allow transfer by a USB link - except laptops etc.

The thing is that these MP3 players and external drives don't have a proper operating system to communicate with the camera. It would be good if the camera manufacturers built in some software to talk to an external drive!

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

There are various ways to back up a camera to an iPod. I have a Belkin "Media Reader for iPod" that claims to work with any iPod that has a docking slot. It can read CF, SD or memory sticks.

There's also the "Apple iPod Camera Connector [M9861]" that will work only with certain combinations of iPod and camera. See the reviews on this page for some comments, both favourable and otherwise...

Amazon.co.uk: Apple iPod Camera Connector [M9861]: Apple: Electronics & Photo

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

Thanks Sej! That one in the link looks to be what I'm after. I now just need to see if it's D300 compatible. The Belkin one you mention is not compatible with the iPod video, which is what I own.

Silk. I believe the latest Nikon's (and I therefore suspect Canon's too) do have the ability to communicate with external drives.

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

I always thought that most all the mp3 player would down load pictures from the camera, the Arcos and ipod both have worked for me. But cards are so cheap why would you not just carry an extra card with a battery?

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

I have extra cards of course, but I am about to go away for 5 days and this will give me insurance that I won't run out. I don't want to fork out £70 on the off chance I 'may' need to use another CF when I will already have an 80GB HDD with me in the form of an iPod.

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

There's a difference between slotting the camera card into an MP3 player or portable store, and linking the camera to the player with a USB cable. It's interesting that you can now do this, but I think I'll just buy another CF card.

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

I use my Archos to copy my cards (with the CF adapter) - just a straight backup copy if I'm just after a 'belt & braces' copy or copy to Archos and laptop if away for a few days/weeks (took 5.5k pics on my Oz/NZ trip, so would've needed a few cards!)

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

Agreed. The benefit is that you'll never be caught short again if you have an 80GB emergency back up strategy with you. I'll almost always be covered with the CF's I take but knowing I can back up with that adaptor to my iPod (which is always with me) just gives me a nice comfort zone. If I find that I am using it all the time then I know it's time to add yet another CF to my collection

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

It may be possible but you will need to sort the details. However, I have an Epson P2000 image storage and Viewer. This can read cards directly but can do most things that you would use an iPod for as well.

Re: Backing up from camera to iPod?

I can transfer images (RAW) to my ipod (30GB Photo) using the connector as in sajanus's link, but it does drain the battery on the pod as it takes ages. Also you have to ensure that itunes is set up to see the pod as an external drive.

Do you have the 4GB Archos or is there some sort of card reader for say, the 80GB? (please say yes)

LOL! Yes, Mike! (Now, what have I said 'yes' to?)

I've the AV140 - a little dated now but still works fine, which has an optional CF adapter
