Bad thing about 5D Mark II

When I went shooting swans today, I instantly found one limitation that I have to work with and I get a little bit annoyed...

Somehow I find all 9 focus points are way too closely packed in the centre. Because of this I have struggled to keep the moving swan in focus with good composition (as I have to put the swan right in the middle!!). Since there is no advanced AF, I could only zoom out and use AI Servo on one focus point to allow some extra room for cropping...

Is it because I am not skillful enough to work with this camera or is this a known problem?

I have never realised the 9 focus points that close to the centre on my 400D...

Re: Bad thing about 5D Mark II

I have to say I thought about this when I found out that the D3 used the same points / proportions for AF as the D300, cos obviously the points would take up a much smaller space in the frame. I dunno about this, it seems a complete shortfall, but surely the manufacturers of both brands would have borne this in mind...
