Battery Life?

as well as my Olympus Dslr I also carry a small Fuji compact when I am walking and climbing. While I have never had an issue with the DSLr battery the compact has always been affected by the temperature an on a couple of occasions, although fully charged, it has not switched on at all .

I suspect the battery is goosed but what is the expected/average life of Li-ion battery and if I replace it am I best to stick with Fuji or another make?

Thanks Dave

Re: Battery Life?

My OH had a Li-ion battery in her mobile that went dead in 4 years. She has a thing about mobile phones - which includes not charging batteries. Apart from the usual battery care, as far as I know Li-ion should be kept topped up, not quite like lead-acid, but they hold their charge better if not allowed to go completely flat. I read somewhere that the best way to store Li-ion was to fully discharge it, fully charge it and shelve it. They have a slow self-discharge rate so should be OK for 6 months.

For a year I have alternated a Nikon brand and Hahnel to no ill effect. The Hahnel has slightly higher storage capacity so gives a few more shots. Other than that I have not noticed any difference. However, if you buy a non-OEM battery for the first time, it's probably best from a shop where you can get a guarantee of suitability.

Re: Battery Life?

Li-Ion batteries have no "Memory", as it is called, and are not affected by charging half full, so can be charged at any point in the battery life without affecting how it performs.

I have a few of them, and they are a lot older than 4 yrs old...
I am suspecting a possible fault in the batteryif it has given up at this stage?...
However, you mention a possible overheat problem as well?...
Or is that too COLD?....

Either way, yes, get a new one...
I would suggest Manufacturers recommendations though.
If I buy a Non-Genuine Cannon battery for mine, if the thing goes pop, the warranty is invalid.
That and the fact there have been a few pretty high profile cases of "Blag" batteries mass produced that are not safety checked properly causing minor explosions.....

"Small Fuji", I have one of those, it takes "AA" size batteries, if that is the case, any GOOD make of rechargeable will work...
Use a named brand that you trust.

Re: Battery Life?

Thanks for both your replies.

it is the fuji compact that the problem is with and I think I will get a new OEM battery. It has been the cold that has given problems when in the hills.

Thanks again

Re: Battery Life?

When you are not using the camera, keep the battery in a pocket so that your body heat will keep it warm.

Re: Battery Life?

All Li-Ion batteries suffer from a limited lifespan - which begins the minute they come off the production line. So as well as them only lasting a limited number of recharges (like all rechargeables) they will last only a few years, whether used or not - so making sure you have up to date stock that's not been sitting around is a bit of an issue!
