best a3+ photo printer?
Hows it going?-Im new to this site, I was wondering if anyone had any information on the latest a3+ photo printers, I have been considering the epson r1800 for its long lasting prints and ability to print on roll paper-allowing 44" long panoramic prints-I also wont to do black n white prints-does anyone know if epson are planning on releasing a new model any time soon? as i understand this printer is a few years old and wondered if a new model was out-I have considered the r2400 which is said to be better for black n white but still very good for color-I just wish it had the roll feed for large panoramic prints-any advice on these printers or alternatives would be a big help.
Regards Allan |

Hi mountain wilderness and welcome to Pixalo
![]() There have been a couple of threads on this subject recently Canon pro9000 versus Epson R1800 and also check out the Equipment review section as Gary has done a write up on the Canon 9000 there too. If you have any addition questions or thoughts please post them here and we'll do our best to answer them ![]() |

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
I can't comment on the Canon, but from seeing Mono prints on the Epson R2400 they are outstanding
Upon visiting a dedicated Monochrome Photography club once, I aslo found mosts memebrs had chosen the R2400 for Mono printing. I can't comment on the colour capabilities though. Hope that helps a bit. |

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
Cheers Dave, I have no doubt about the r2400s mono capabilities but wonder about the color prints compared to the r1800?-I also like the 44" panoramic print capabilities from the r1800-does anyone know of a printer which is good at both and does panoramics as well?

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
I use the i9900 and the r1800 both. I only use the i9900 on water color paper, does very well. the r1800 for glossy and matte papers. I remember that when I frist got them that I had to work with the epson for mono and the setting. I print mono in rgb mode and seem to get better results with the greys then my other choice of selecting print with black ink. Haven't had that problem of a color cast sence then, maybe a quirk thing when it was new. I keep notes in my printer cabnet so I don't forget any settings. At one time I did alot of color prints for a group of clowns, thats when I adopted the canon for water color, I was never able to make better prints on the epson. They looked almost 3-D. I know off topic, but printer talk is good.

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
Mountain wilderness- Have a look at the Epson 3800. I think personally it is the best mono/colour printer (whitin a reasonable price range) epson has released yet. The mono prints are nothing short of breath taking. I also have a canon i9950. The colour gamut produced by the epson surpasses that of the canon quite easily in my opinion. The 3800 doesnt have provision for a roll, however the driver allows for prints 17 in wide by 37.4 in long. I have a roll of hahnemuehle photo rag and the panoramas this produces are quite spectacular. I got the paper cut into lengths at a local printers. These panoramas can only be achieved from the rear feed option on the printer....doesnt work any other way!!!!
The printer is big.....enough said. The 3800 has 9 ink tanks(called a tank because it has 80mls ink) which includes three blacks for different papers/effects etc. I think these extra blacks and the overall quality of the ultrachrome inks allow for metarism free prints. The tanks are priced around the $100 Australian dollars. The printer cost me $1650 Australian. I know companies charge outragous amounts for ink but taking these figure into account the printer really only cost $750 Australian which is about $250 pounds...someone correct me if im wrong, I was wrong once before.....mistaken I think. http://www.hahnemuehle.com/index.php...ng=en&pkat=307 Epson Inkjet Printers - Image Science |

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
My initial experiences with the R2400 have been very promising. Both colour and monochrome are very good.
The one negative so far is don't use Kodak paper - the banding on that was significant. I have discovered that Epson will take back the ink cartridges for recycling so at least (I) don't put them direct to landfill. |

Re: best a3+ photo printer?
I had made my mind up on buying an Epson R2400, but Canon has just launched their Pixma Pro 9500, so now am waiting for a review to help me decide. Everyone raves about the Epson and I have an Epson now, but this Canon has 10 inks and no swapping over of tanks for b&w or colour.
So a bit of a dilemma! Epson retails aroun £480 and Canon £600. Epson is 18months old, but tried and tested, Canon is latest technology.... How is a consumer to decide? All comments appreciated! Steve |
