Birmingham/West Mids Wedding Photographer

Hello,

I am after a bit of help. I am wanting to start shooting weddings next year but haven't actually shot one before.

Does anyone need an assistant? I live in and will be working in Carlisle but my folks live in Birmingham so am appealing to Mids photographers as I spend some weekends there.

I am intending on going down the route of staging a wedding for the purposes of my Portfolio but I can't see this as a realistic as I wouldnt be preapring myself for the pitfalls of wedding photography and everything that could go wrong!!!

PS will be copying and pasting this message into other forums so you are not getting Deja-vu if you have read this before!!

PM me or email kevin_nobin@hotmail.com if there's any help out there!!

Re: Birmingham/West Mids Wedding Photographer

The best way to get started is to put on a good suit, get together a portfolio of people pictures to show that you know what you're doing with a camera and then call on the studios in your area. If you can sell one of them on hiring you as an assistant, you'll have passed the first test of a wedding photographer's many skills: the ability to sell yourself to others.

As I have said before, probably to the point of nausea, the ability to take well exposed, well composed pictures is a given for any commercial photographer. The important skills are to do with salesmanship, self management and the (covert) management of your clients. A very good understanding of business is also essential.

There are probably more than a million people in Britain alone who, with modern equipment, could successfully photograph a wedding. To get paid to do so, you need commercial, not photographic ability. That commercial ability is what you need to demonstrate, to get any form of employment in the current climate.

If I were you,(and Im not) when you get to Brum have a glance through the yellow Pages for wedding Photographers phone them up and tell them that you are looking for work experience to be a wedding photographer, whatever answer they give you that will tell you how hard it is to be a wedding photographer, the other way around it is if you have a good portfolio of pictures then take that around to all the studios and wedding outlets in the City and have a chat with them and take it from there. On the black side there are 250.000 people out of work in Brum according to reports in the local press......thats what you are up against.

Re: Birmingham/West Mids Wedding Photographer

wow! thanks for the replies. I didnt expect to have such informative feedback.

I believe myself to be competent with my equipment and currently shoot events, gigs and some press and Page Ranking material.
My worry really is that too many people go into weddings thinking that it's easy enough. We have all seen terrible wedding pictures and I don't want to be that kind of photographer.

I think all of you are absolutley right.. I will select a dozen or so images and do some footwork when in the city.
I figured that it would be better to try for experience in Bimingham over my current town (Carlisle, Cumbria) as photographers might think they would be training the competition. Is this a legitimate train of thought or am i being over paranoid??

Any more feedback/suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!

At the end of the day, I think I am respectful that I would be shooting the most important day of a lot of people lives and don't want to mess that up by not being aware of anything that could go wrong and not having a contingency in place.

I am sure that I could shoot a wedding tomorrow and have geat feedback from the clients, but at the moment, there is a niggling doubt in my mind that I have overlooked something or I have failed to consider some aspect of the event.

A very sensible attititude, if I can say that without sounding patronising.

One thing you're up against is customer expectation. When I did weddings, it was pretty easy. We had a menu of shots that we'd take and the customer selected for that, paying for them in dozens (we used TLRs exclusively in those days). Now, from what I can see, the market is fragmented with the extremes being the sort of formal work I used to do and a form of pseudo press reportage style. I get the impression that few, if any operators do both but tend to offer services somewhere on the spectrum between the two. The trick, in commercial terms, is to spot part of the market that is currently unserviced or under-serviced and put your offer there.

My advice to a beginner, though, would be to start by offering a formal service. That way you have considerable control over the entire process, most especially your customers' expectations. Jumping in at the other end may appeal to your ego but so many things can go wrong that I shudder to think of it.

Nope not patronising at all
Starting as a "formal" photographer is quite a good idea, thanks for that. I know that reportage is "en vogue" at the moment so the formal approach may develop it's own niche.

It's such a grey area and I know there's no right nor wrong way to get into this side of the industry, but help from people who know definately contribute to making an informed decision.
For that I thank you.
I just dont think I have the arrogance to think it's as easy as picking up a camera and hoping for the best.
