blurred background?

I've recently posted some pics of wimbledon 2008 and was wondering,how do you keep the player sharp but have the background blurred?

Use a large aperture but not at a long distance

50mmF/1.4 @ F/1.4


300F/2.8 @ 2.8

Check out P-E's gallery - he has some great sporting shots that are just what you are after.

His secret is using a 300mm lens at f2.8 aperture.
