Borders in PS

Quite used to this now, but one thing I can't do:

Make a border, for example like the ones I use now, with a thin white box outlining the image, then a large black outline (the main border body), but what I also want is to have another thin white (non filled) box in between the edge of the border and the thin white (non filled) box outlining the image...I hope that makes sense....

It doesn't how about pointing to an example if you can find one?

Like this? Or a variation on this?

Re: Borders in PS

Yes exactly like that, indeed a variation as you said, but that's the idea, to get an interim white box!

Re: Borders in PS

Right. There are probably other ways of doing this, but this was very simple and used only the canvas size command in the image menu. Using the image I posted as an example:

1 With image open Image menu>canvas size.
2 With the relative box checked, the centre anchor point box selected and the width/height set to cm (or you can use anything you want), we now make the first white border.
3 Enter 0.1 in both the height and width boxes, and select white as the extension colour. Click OK, we now have the first border.
4 Image menu>canvas size again and now set the boxes to 0.5 and the extention colour to black. Click Ok and we have the first part of the black border.
5 Back to the Image menu>canvas size, now enter 0.2 and the extention to white. OK gives the white insert.
6 Image menu>canvas size for the last time and now enter 1.0 in the boxes and black in the extention colour. Ok now gives the border as in my image.

You can choose the values to enter in the height/width boxes to suit yourself. I'm sure there is another way to do this with layers that gives more control and options. If I find out how to to do it, I'll post that too.

Re: Borders in PS

Shouldn't this be in the Photo Manipulation section? Doesn't fall into the "General Photography" category. I mention this, because I might want to refer back to it, but I won't be able to find it, 'cos I would expect it to be in Manipulation section. Graham, is it possible for you to move this thread accordingly?

BTW Graham, when I asked you how to do borders, you wouldn't tell me, you just said you use actions which were too complicated to explain

At that time I was just playing around and using the quite complex border of Kelby as a model. It did indeed have 12 stages and four pages of his book. I've just got to grips with some simpler borders and as I was typing this one, I thought it might be better in the tutorials forum with the other one I put in there.

You know I would not hold back anything I thought would help others, but did not realise you were still after some starting points.

I'll move the tut into the other forum so you can find it again, but ONLY if you will forgive me.

I know that Graham, just teasing you. As it happens, I discovered that PhotoPlus has macro's (actions) to do frames/borders, + I was experimenting with these only last night, + also giving some a go manually, using the very method you set out here I did some of these a while back as well, but then forgot how to do them, but happily re-discovered them last night, soooo ... in case I forget again, I'd like to be able to refer back to your very concise tut, so TFS

Re: Borders in PS

Now I'm forgiven and can sleep at night again, I've started a new thread in the tutorials forum with a couple of other tweaks. Simple Borders in PS - 2. I'm leaving the posts here so the thread makes sense to anyone reading it.

How about a link

I still think this thread needs to be moved to the "Image Manipulation" section, as it's not about General Photography

Lazy wotsit! .

Although I can see where you are coming from, I don't think this really qualifies as 'photo manipulation' as we are only talking about adding a border, not manipulating the image. As such I think that it sits in General photography Q's & A's just as well, and there is now a tutorial HERE too.

Re: Borders in PS

Ooh you are stubborn You make a border with your image editor, not your camera, therefore this topic is image editing not photography per se but have your own way ... well, you will won't you ... because you can

Edit: Thanks for the link
