Brighton area... help!

As part of my Brightn Tattoo Book project I've recruited a bunch of people willing to model for me for free, and new recruits are rolling in still (how? Now the weather's warmed up and people are wearing less, I look out for tattoos, hand out flyers).

The deal is that I get them into a studio, take professional full-length shots and close-ups of tattoos. Hoorah!

Downside is, I've never worked used a studio, or studio flash (I barely ever even use my speedlite) and I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

Just blagging as I go, basically.

Is there anyone within easy reach of Brighton who knows what they're doing vis-a-vis studio flash, and would be willing to help out in return for credit in the book, and the chance to take some pictures themselves?

I'm also on the lookout for inexpensive studio hire and a stylist who'll work for love...

If you have never used studio flash and are unable to get someone to show you how, I'd consider making alternative arrangements for getting the pictures. You will need to not only know about lighting bit also be conversant with using your camera in manual mode.

Have you thought about hiring a studio? Then you will have lights, backgrounds etc - everything you need They might even do lessons.

There are studios in Brighton

Photographic Studio Hire in Brighton, Sussex

and there are more too.

Calumet do kit hire

And the Flash Centre

The Flash Centre - Rentals

(See rentals tab in the banner)

as do others.

Re: Brighton area... help!

Thanks for that. I've looked into studio hire (which I'm almost certainly going to have to fork out for) but the project is going to cost a smallish fortune and I'm trying to cut costs! Sevenish days of studio hire is steep without having to pay a lighting tech on top. I'm also looking at alternative venues - a church hall, for example - and hiring lights, etc. I can shell out for a day's tuition on lighting, but a bit of handholding on the day might pay dividends.

I'm perfectly happy using my camera on manual (I used an OM1 for about 20 years, and use a mamiya 645 now alongside digital) and have a flash meter, it's a confidence thing as much as anything.

Well if all else fails, I'll keep on blagging and make my mistakes on the day. I can tether camera to laptop, so I guess if any errors are obvious I'll see them before its too late.

ask Kirstie, she runs training and may be able to help Studio - Eclectia Gallery & Studio » Eclectia Gallery & Studio

studio stuff can be cool but another route for photography is environmental images,. some of the stuff you did before with natural light have an authenticity that may be lost in a studio setting,. so don't discount what else is possible (I have no idea of course of what you are aiming to achieve!)

Thanks for that, Silver. Looks interesting, and didn't know she offered courses. I'll check her out. Gallery space too... interesting!

I had thought about the environmental route, and haven't discounted it completely.
