Brochure Job

Well I had a bad day yesterday, full of self doubt and thinking my work was not up to scratch. I've been working on some jewellery shots for a jeweller who liked my work and it's not easy thinking of ideas and ways to present stuff in a different manner.

Anyway, after a day of thinking I might just as well give up on the camera, I took the shots in today and they liked them and I will be photographing jewellery for a 40 page catalogue!!!

There really is light at the end of the tunnel

Congratulations! Well done, you must be so pleased especially if you've been feeling a bit despondent lately.

Nice one

Re: Brochure Job

Thanks for the comments. It's been tricky (and very, very full of self doubt, which I am an expert at ), but I've done some straight light box & reflective shots on some opals, which look good reflected. I've shot some peridot & white gold against Ice and Orange slices, rings in melted chocolate and citrine & silver against a leopard print velvet scarf. He likes the adverts in vogue and tatler!!!! So I've been practicing layering in PS, using the jewellery on a separate layer to the background and adding shadows and reflections. It's going to be hard work, but very interesting. I will post some stuff up later in the week when I've been over. at present I've got a light tent and 3 daylight balanced lights, so very simple heath robinson set up, but he likes the results, apparently I manage to bring the stones to life.

Re: Brochure Job

Jewellery, silver & glass are difficult to photograph. We had this as a set subject for a Club competion many years ago and many of us were using light tents etc. but none of us produced really good pictures. Later a successful professional photographer friend was asking about our club set subjects and I mentioned that we occassionally chose very difficult subjects. He rather sneeringly said "and what would you call a difficult subject?" To which I replied "silver and glass". He paused and then confirmed that this is indeed a difficult subject and one he tries to avoid as a professional!

So if your client is pleased with your photographs for this challenging area, your photography is probably better than you think.

Thanks Dave. It's also a project that's certainly going to test & improve my PS skills.

Re: Brochure Job

Thanks, been honing the PS skills all week, eyes are sore from reading the manuals! Off to the jewellers tomorrow afternoon with my mini studio to start taking the shots. His stuff is amazing, all individually made and he's made pieces for the tower of london.
Going to use a white or black background and then photograph the backdrops at home for some of them.

Re: Brochure Job

I've also not got much of an idea on how to price this job, I've looked at alamy for a guide, but am thinking of along the lines of £50 per image? How does that sound? I've got to ask him today, what his budget is.

Depends how many he wants - but have to say that it's really down to what his budget might be

Re: Brochure Job

That's what I thought. Have an idea from looking round, but will ask about budget & work from there. Will be photographing stuff all afternoon at his place & he needs to tell me what theme he is after, so I can take some props next time or drop onto backgrounds.
