Question Brothers Wedding

As some may know i recentley got my canon eos 450d, and the fun still hasnt worn off, but recentley my parents have been nagging me to do a little photobook for my brother and for the shear experience it will bring me, but at 15 this is a big burden to me, obviously my brothers hired a proffesional photographer as im only amateur, but still, i dont know anything about a proffesional wedding shoot like this, and is exected im cacking my self, also i dont know how i would take shots at like the reception whilst there saying the vows and stuff cause id feel as if i was interupting... but other than that has anyone got any tips for me, about taking the photos what photos look good and what im type of shots, angles and things im taking, but fortunatley the wedding not till august, so ive still got quite a while yet, but still i'd much rather prepare as much as i can, i want to take plenty of photos then eventually print some out if good enough and put together a little scrap book for my brothers wedding.

Thanks, all advice welcome,

Liam

Hi Liam....since you are not the main photographer there is no responsibility on you and I would do it for the experience. My only tips would be

1 Watch the pro tog
2 Keep well out of his way
3 Do a search on Pixalo for wedding threads.

Good luck.

Re: Brothers Wedding

Don't be afraid to look for a shoot that's a little more creative than the 'standard' wedding set. If there's any young children attending keep an eye on them, they will always find mischief and make for good candids.

And as Chrisa says, don't forget to enjoy yourself, the real pressure is on the pro

The pro has all the usual shots covered ,so go for guests arriving, children as said, people chatting , the group shots the pro is taking,BUT do not get in the way, take the shots while the pro is setting the scene ,you will get some candids this way.
But I cannot stress to much not to get in the professionals way,His job is hard enough.

Re: Brothers Wedding

Many years ago I was doing some event photography for a local company (I am an amateur photographer); I was persuaded to do this for a favour on a number of occassions and was well paid. One of the events was rather more prestigious and there was to be some special presentations requiring maximum local publicity. When I arrived with my limited amateur kit, I spotted a professional who I knew to be head photographer for the local newspaper. I was very embarrassed and really did not think I should be there. He then came over to me well before the action started and introduced himself. I explained that the company had engaged me mainly for their internal publicity and made no secret of the fact that I was an amateur with limited experience. To my surprise the professional was not only friendly but gave me some very useful tips.

My advice to you is to speak to the professional as soon as you are able and explain your position and you might also be lucky enough to meet someone who will be only to happy to accommodate you and even give you tips. Obviously you will need to let him have priority.

Re: Brothers Wedding

Yeah, I'd have to agree - I've come across some great pros who're very friendly and helpful. The only miserable ones tend to be the ones who think you're trying to take away their job from them - and they're always the ones who take rubbish shots (so arguably someone really should take away their job!)

Re: Brothers Wedding

To add to this "older" thread....

Go enjoy yourself, ad keep out of the way of the "pro"...

Go "No Promises, I am still learning" to the family, say you will take your camera, but as its new, you cant promise anything, one more camera will not be noticed, and take the shots the Pro doesnt....
People NOT posing for the camera are sometimes more interesting... especially if they are ignoring you at the time, so try to melt into the background and see what you get.

Full battery, spare if you have one, as many memory cards as you can find, take as many shots in as many different situations as you can without getting in the way, and take a NOTE PAD....
Try to take details of what you did to get each shot.

The ones that DONT work may teach you more about your camera than the ones that do......
You can look at what you tried to do, what happened, and work out why it went wrong... that way, you will remember in the future what will or wont work.

That is how I taught myself with the EOS 350D, my first DSLR.....
That is the wonder of Digital, No Limits... you can delete what doesnt work, but, dont delete it until you know what went wrong.

I had my Camera at my own wedding....
Eh?... why?... am I THAT nuts?....
No, it was a LONG day, and I just kept it at my side, just in case, and I am glad I did, as I got a couple of beauties of the Kids and their Mum that no one else got, or even thought to take....
But that is my particular style, I like the shots that you HAVE to be on full auto to catch, because by the time you think about taking them otherwise, the "moment" has passed....

The Pro we hired for the day was very good, and the "Official" album is just what we wanted, but those extra shots.... priceless.

(Some of my best work comes from moments when no one knew I was taking a photo...)

Re: Brothers Wedding

Id, just like to say thanks to all the posts, id kind of forgotten about this post except for email notifications, one thing i would like to add, what sort of lens would be most beneficia?, and wold a flash for the hot shoe be beneficial as well?, as my other brother is getting into professional photography as well and im sure he would lend me some equipment for the day.

Also its going to be hard for me to take pictures of the ceremony as i was recentley asked by my brother to be groomsmen but the evening do i will take as many as humanley possible.

Thanks, Liam

Take as many lenses as you own, you never know what you may need.
The standard lens 18-55 that comes with the camera will be quite good, but a mid range zoom may be needed, however, in reduced light, the Zoom may not be usable without a BIG flash....

On to the flash question...
The flash that comes with the camera is "adequate", but nothing special, and in low light, especially if you start to use optical zoom, it will soon start to produce "Grainy" shots....

I have the Canon "speedlight" 420, a nice small inexpensive flash unit that can cope quite well until I start using the BIG zoom lens, that is quite enough for inside shots of the type you are going to be taking, I would suggest take a look at what you can afford before buying, but I wouldnt suggest you go for a lower spec than the 420, because you will wish you had bought a bigger one very soon.

Also, DO get a Cannon "Speedlight" type flash... they are designed to work with the camera and are absolutely spot on with synchronisation and all that technical stuff

Ahhh... but does it work?....(Was it built to work with EOS Digitals?..)
I have an old Pentax that has an absolute blinder of a flash, but the thing absolutely refuses to communicate with the EOS Digital Canon... thats why I bought the Speedlight....

Of course, the simple answer to this is borrow it before hand and try a few shots to see if its ok........

.......And the other "Simples" answer is going to be that your brother has the same camera as you?..........

Ask your Brother.
As you didnt mention which one it is, I cant give you any specific info, other that stick it on full auto and let the camera do the work....

Otherwise, if you have a white (Or light coloured) ceiling where you are going, and want to try to avoid "Red Eye", I have found altering the flash to a 45deg angle towards the ceiling and bouncing it off that often softens the flash...
But that is no good if its one of those places where the ceiling is so high they have to call the fire brigade with the long ladder to change light-bulbs?..
If you have a flash diffuser, good job, try it.

Otherwise, dont get too close with flash.
I have found standing further away and using the zoom gives better results...

The camera will be a lot slower, but avoid upping the iso to compensate, either get a VERY steady hand, or, get a tripod...
I have two tripods and one monopod, one which stays in my boot at all times, and they are MUCH appreciated in getting those sharp shots from either a zoom lens or low light.

Spare batteries....
Take some.
My flash takes 4 AA batteries, and I always slip an extra set in my pocket when I am going to be using it...

Know your crowd.
Family do's?... there is ALWAY one littkle mommy's princess "Take MY photo/Can I see it?"
Take a couple, then know a good excuse... you can delete them afterwards.
There will ALWAYS be someone like me, who does NOT like being in front of a camera... dont annoy them by being too persistent in getting a photo.
Know when to stop...
A BIG flash unit, even one of medium size like mine, can be seen as a pest in a small room....
And it amazing how small a room gets after a dozen photo's within 5 mins...
You can always use the camera's own flash for closer shots.

Anyone else got some tips here for Liam?...

Re: Brothers Wedding

wow thanks Silver Dragon thats great help my brothers suggested the point it at the ceiling technique to and ive tried it a few times, and he got alot of good shots out of it, i dnt know about diffusers, my brothe lives in london so other than facebook i dont get much change to speak to him, but i know for sure he wil bring his entire kit with him, as for ceiling heights or wall colours i dont know, im quite busy with gcse revision at the moment so its not the greatest time to do a recce, i have an 18-55mm lens which i plan on using, i may also borrow one of my brothers lens just to test and take some shots.

i would just like to thank everyone for all the advice, its in 6 weeks so its getting ever closer, thanks everyone.

thanks , Liam

If you know anyone who gets Digital photography magazine last month they did a fold out field guide to wedding photography, it had some great tips and a flow chart for each location ie inside the church etc to help you remember everything.

Re: Brothers Wedding

I want to actually thank everyone for all the advice for taking pictures at the wedding, didnt get time to take much pictures my self cause there was instead 3 professional photographers so there was ALOT of photos being taken, and as an usher i had to be in alot of them, and as my brothers mates are all like 26, there loved buying me drinks, and iresponsibley i got pretty drunk so as of like 8-12 and onwards i was pretty out of it, but i got a few photos taken in my moments of sobriety, with my brother 5d mk II and he will be sending them to be soon so we will have to wait and see...

Thanks everyone, liam
