Built in Flash (EOS 400D)

Hi,

I have a couple of questions about the built in flash features of the 400D that I don't really understand.

There is a FELock. From what I read, I think this allows you to centre the object, fire the flash and this locks the exposure. Then you can re compose the shot without changing the exposure. Is this correct?

Also, there is an option in the custom functions that sets the flash sync speed. I can set this to AUTO or 1/200. If set to 1/200, all the pictures I take will be a 1/200 shutter speed no matter what other light conditions are. What is the point and benifits of this.

Finally, I was looking at the curtain settings. I thought by changing the curtain means that the flash fires when the shutter opens or when it closes. If set to 1st curtain, I get a flash when I press the shutter release. If I set to 2nd, I get a flash at the start and at the end of exposure. Not sure why or what this is for?

Looking forward to advise and comments.

Thanks
Paul

re: Built in Flash (EOS 400D)

the custom functions like curtain setting and sync speed ar for an external flash not sure if they will control the on board flash as i have never used it on either my 400D or my 30D ( me lenses are too big and ust create a shadow at the bottom of the image)

Lighting effects....
Say you want to over-expose or under-expose, this allows you to set the shutter speed, and use aperture or ISO to alter...
*Simples* explanation of auto being that the camera opens the shutter and fires the flash, then having looked at the amount of light coming back in leaves the shutter open "Until its got enough" to make a photograph....
Sometimes with that, you get odd results, and on auto, you cant re-take with different settings.

If, for instance, you try something I did, (admitted, with a speedlight external flash..) which gave a "Odd" result, but worked...
I wanted a building to "Stand out", so set the flash up with shutters and a diffuser, to ONLY light the building, set a fixed shutter speed, and "Guestimated" the rest with a few test shots until I got what I wanted....
Result, the building stood out whilst everything else was in darkness.....

I bought my camera fully knowing it was capable of more than I knew at the time (I suspected it may be more intelligent than me as well....) and I look at the question "How does that work then?" by trying it...

Thats the beauty of Digital.... you can shoot a whole card of tests "Just to see what happens"
