Wink Buy your camera gear now

Another article in this months Photo Mag that supports others experiences of Camera gear prices going up. 20% minimum seems to be the current guidance.

Now assuming this is going to affect second hand prices, it makes sense to empty your bank savings where your getting <1% interest & go buy all the lovely camera gear you've always wanted. If you buy at the right price now, you could find a year down the line you can sell the same gear for more than you paid. Come to Dave's Bank of savings

That's my excuse anyway

Re: Buy your camera gear now

If I wanted a product that had been around a while, I would definitely buy now. However, I want a 5D Mkii which should still come down in price though this may get cancelled by these new increases due to the falling pound. I was considering selling some Premium Bonds to buy the Camera as the return is very poor but I had a £50 win today. I am just wondering whether it is worth hanging on to see if there is a bargain at Focus on Imaging?

Re: Buy your camera gear now

I went last year and there did not seem to be much in the way of bargains but I plan to go again this year - who knows. I would like a Sigma 30 mm f1.4 lens, but am not really sure if I NEED it . I wonder what the NEC car parking will be this time. It was £8 last time.

I wonder how long the increased pricing is going to last, before prices start to drop again - hoping of course that they do!

Re: Buy your camera gear now

I reckon that many suppliers are struggling to maintain current prices, given the weakness of the £ and the fact that everything is imported. It must be a real dilemma for them and profit margins are probably near zero just to keep the turnover going. Eventually they'll have to give in and raise the prices, but nobody wants to be the first to blink.

If there's something you want and can afford, I'd buy it now.

Re: Buy your camera gear now

I don't agree. If camera gear is not shifting at todays prices, increasing prices is not going to encourage spending. I think prices will fall for new gear, but maybe second hand will slightly increase. I have noticed on e-bay people paying more for second hand gear than I have seen on the internet new.

Re: Buy your camera gear now

It's Catch 22 bbarny. No supplier wants to increase prices, but they can't survive by selling at a loss. Unless the pound perks up very quickly, they have a choice between charging a realistic price based on the current exchange rate, in which case customers won't want to pay the higher prices so they'll go bust, or keeping the prices low and making zero or negative profit, in which case they'll go bust anyway.

This is not a good time to be a seller of imported products. I'd guess that many are hoping to ride out the storm on whatever capital they have, but some notable and respected photographic suppliers have already succumbed.

I hear what your saying silkstone. I fear for Jessops. I go in there when I am in Manchester and browse, last time the stock seemed barren, all the window shelves were empty, just cards advertising thier sale. Inside very limited stock and loads of staff. I can see more closures coming.

Jessops would have had my latest purchase but the price went up £60 overnight (£20 with end of sale and another £40 on top) so went elsewhere,

Yup, reckon there'll be a significant price hike on all electrical equipment - see Empire Direct has gone: "The company had been established for 25 years and marketed itself as the UK's largest independent retailer of electrical goods with a turnover of £150 million"

But I do wonder how long the manufacturers of equipment can hold out - their sales will be taking a beating and Japan will certainly not want to go back into deflation

As usual come the end of the year I am teeing up a few purchases and there has been a noticable price hike. It's a double wammy for me becasue I also am in the thows of getting some new AV kit and that is proving really problematic now.

Re: Buy your camera gear now

Hi Dave
I would just like to publically express my gratitude for this post. My beloved informed me of this event and suggested that he would need to buy NOW - this would mean that I could have his second-hand, perfectly formed, 70-300 IS USM. Naturally, I agreed - in his best interests of course, and the purchase was made. The following day he then said that he would sell it instead. The 'Big Silence' ensued and I now have the new lens about to be installed in my new camera bag.
Many thanks for your support.

Re: Buy your camera gear now

The problem is nobody is spending money and since the last price increase its just made matters worse, it certainly caught me out, I had decided on what to buy then I thought well do I really need it and yes I do and in the meantime it had gone up between £300 and £500 according to where you buy from! so perhaps a holiday in Egypt may be more tempting, for £500.
