buying new lenses

Hi just thought I would tell a little story about a couple of lenses I purchased from comets, basically in Aug of 2009 I purchased two sigma lenses a 55 -200mm and a 70 300mm at the time the 55 200 was on a sale price of 99 . 99 the 70 300 was at cost 149 .99 I also purchased the extra warranty on both items , now got them home and strapped them on my canon 40d and took a few shots with both lenses I decided I really liked the 55 200 and would make that one my main everyday lenses . now fast forward to Dec 09 snow was heavy on the ground and although landscape photography is not my forte I decided to go out and see what I could capture , well after an hour or so I had had enough of the cold and snow falling so was getting ready to return home when the inevitable happened I slipped on some ice and ended up on my back looking up at the sky after a millisecond of feeling a berk I thought oh god my camera and after retrieving it from the snow discovered the lens was in two pieces , so now I have a problem, once at home and a warm cuppa I checked my receipts and was very surprised to find that on purchasing the extra warranty I was also insured so hesitantly I rang comets to clarify my extra warranty/insurance, surprise surprise I was covered so I immediately took the broken item back to comets for them to inspect it and to make sure what I was told on the phone was correct but hey they they were right I was insured so after giving me a receipt off it went to be evaluated and I sat back at home reading all the clauses in their warranty and I must admit was pleasantly surprised to find that if it could not be repaired I would be entitled to a replacement , now comes the truth comets no longer sell or stock the 55 200mm their replacement is the canon 55 250mm is , now as the insurance was a new for old was it possible I would get the canon as a replacement ? I waited for comets to ring me with the news . Fast forward to Jan 2010 the phone rings its comets sir your lenses is not repairable so I had a choice of refund or replacement lens so I asked for the replacement lens under the new for old insurance policy , surprise surprise I could not have a replacement because it was wrote off under first year warranty not insurance!! I suppose the moral of this tale from my experience, is the extra you pay for the warranty worth it and make sure that the lenses you buy will still be available for the length of the warranty/insurance

Re: buying new lenses

I find it hard to believe that you were insured by buying an extended warranty. If you are you ought to have some sort of policy document, and I can't believe that the sales staff would not mention it during their pitch rather than just seeing something on the receipt. Are you sure that you have got this right? Check out the small print of the warranty and see if accidental damage insurance is included.

You might find your household insurance might cover the lens. Worth checking it out.

Re: buying new lenses

your right about a policy, no i was not issued one but on the extended warranty receipt it quite cleary states insurance policy and yes their warranty does include accidental damage my argument was why insure the product if their warranty covers accidental damage dont forget the manufacturers warranty (sigma) does not cover accident damage point 2 the warranty does not include a new for old but insurance does my feeling is they realised that because they do not sell or stock the 55 - 200 they would have to give me the canon but that is 200 dearer and by using the warranty claim they are not obliged to make use of the insurance policy ( which comets admit i had) all i was trying to do is warn others to ask the relevant questions when purchasing from comets as to what the extended warranty covers (normally breakdown not accident damage)
