Calling all Motorsport Photographers..... Goodwood Revival Beckons

Dear all,

I am going to the practice day of the Goodwood revival at the end of the month, I have never taken any motorsport photos before and was hoping for a bit of advice.

What sort of shutter speed do I need to freeze the action of the cars?? Is it better to rely on autofocus, or manually prefocus?? I have been considering getting a monopod for the event, would this be a worthwhile purchase for the day (although its not like I wouldnt use it again)?

Have any of you been to the Goodwood revival before?? We didn't get grandstand tickets, are there places around the track that I can get in to get some pictures of the action?? If so what spots would you advise???

I look forward to any replies....

Any other advice gratefully received!!!

Matt

To freeze the "action" you will need a shutter speed of 1/500th or faster but this doesn't always give the feeling of speed, you may get better results panning with the vehicles at 1/250th and below to keep the vehicle sharp but blur the background. I use predictive focus for all my motorsport stuff and have not had a problem with it but it depends on the camera, your 350d should do a good job. Have fun.
