Calling All Pro Wedding Photographers + Photojournalists

How do you carry your gear about while you work?

Waist belt? Shoulder bag? Or what?

And more specifically, how do you carry two cameras so that they are both handy, e.g. with a long lens on one + short zoom on the other?

Do you hang them both around your neck or over a shoulder? Have one around your neck + the other in a top loader around your waist? Or what?

At the cycling, usually one with a 24-105 and one with a 70-200 both round neck or just on the floor next to me if I'm sitting in one position at a time trial.

I think I've seen it somewhere here that pros tend to hang a camera on each shoulder to advoid crossing the straps.

Re: Calling All Pro Wedding Photographers + Photojournalists

When I'm shooting, I have two bodies - one on each shoulder, arranged so that the lens of each is pointing downwards towards the back of my knee. If needed I'll have my strobes mounted to them as well.

Using D3's, all I need are the 24-70 on one and the 70-200 on the other. That combo would cover about 99% of what you could/would shoot at a wedding.

The 24-70 comes with a small soft case which can loop on to a belt, so you could stow a prime such as the 50 or 85 f/1.4 in there for those times you want artistic shallow DOF shots.

As for lugging my gear around, well, so far...

I've got a Lowepro Slingshot 200 bag for when I need to tote just one body and perhaps a flash and Gorrilapod, maybe chucking in a prime lens for variety as well.

If I know I need to tote more gear but don't need bring my laptop along, then I move up to my Slingshot 300 bag. I can pretty much cram in everything that I need; two bodies, a brace of lenses at at least one flash. If I need two flashguns (think PJ work) then I put one on my belt using a carry pouch.

For those times I need to take a laptop in the field, I use a Lowepro CompuTrekker AW Plus bag. The entire kitchen sink can fit in here; all my bodies, lenses, flashes, accessories and my laptop too. It's pretty heavy when fully loaded so it's used only when absolutely necessary.

Now, because of the weight of the CompuTrekker, it can be very tiring lugging it around airports etc.; to this end I'm going to invest in a Pelican 1510 case. It will serve double-duty - my go-to case for travelling and a secure box to store my kit in when at home.

For wedding work, I'd invest in a Pelican 1510 and learn to use two bodies shoulder style. When you need to swap out gear, just go to where your Peli case is stashed and do it there. There's no need to be a pack horse and tote everything on your person!

Re: Calling All Pro Wedding Photographers + Photojournalists

When I did this for a living, I found that my style changed according to what kit I was using and that depended on what I was doing.

For example, with 35mm, I carried three cameras, wide angle on left shoulder, 50mm round my neck and a long lens (either a 90mm or a 135mm) over right shoulder.

The important thing, I found, was to choose a scheme and stick to it. Bit of a bummer if you grabbed the wrong camera and missed a £1,000 shot.

Still, the good news is that I never came across any £1,000 shots

Re: Calling All Pro Wedding Photographers + Photojournalists

For the weddings I have photographed, I would never have my bits stashed away in a bag.

Two cameras, two lenses, one or two flash units (maybe).

But mainly, no 'buggering around' wasting the brides time, etc.

I would have a paper list in a pocket to ensure that I don't forget to get a 'standard' shot.

Re: Calling All Pro Wedding Photographers + Photojournalists

I use two bodies - 70-200 and 24-70

One (the 70-200) using the blackrapid R strap - excellent for easy use and helping minimise the weight http://www.blackrapid.com/

One with and upstrap (24-70) on my other shoulder - great strap and doesn't slip. http://www.upstrap-pro.com/

Cards / batteries / spare macro lens etc in a boda bag (small one) around my waist. http://www.goboda.com/

Billingham bag stays in the car with the backup gear in
