Camera interface geared for Jpeg's

I have just upgraded form a 20D and the new camera's around the house have new menu items that do a little post processing in camera as taken. I shoot raw and perfer to use my settings there, but I'm finding that my pictures with the new camera are coming out good with very little need to shoot raw. Would you change from raw if your pictures were good enough because of the the new camera processing?

No, not unless you were doing snapshots - I find it enough of a challenge to get all the other settings anywhere near right never mind setting up to process to JPGs

Have never taken a JPG since progressing to dSLR (tried RAW+JPG to see what'll be produced and immediately returned to RAW) - even commission/publication, however rushed they may be

Re: Camera interface geared for Jpeg's

A fair question. I upgraded from a 20D to 5D2 but only used Raw anyway. However, in evaluating cameras before I upgraded, I became aware that there is a lot of image processing in camera for the 5D2 (and 50D as well) which is only applied to JPEG images. Generally the processsing seemed to choose good settings for colour balance, noise reduction and sharpening etc but then why wouldn't they. The same settings are included with the raw files for these two cameras and, if you convert using Canon's DPP software, it is automatically preset to these values. Of course you can change the values in DPP but it gives a good starting point.

For routine photography in controlled light (e.g. studio) and low dynamic range the advantages of raw are not so great. However, less controlled light (strong sunlight, indoors natural light etc.) and medium dynamic range, Raw will always have significant adavantages, if you are prepared to work on them in the Raw editor.

Yes.

I get JPEG outa the Wifes camera, and the Kids camera(s) and they are good enough to print from...
I prefer RAW outa MY camera, because that gives me better results on manual settings... on the Auto settings, I get JPEG... I shoot on Auto, read the exif data, and if the shot is "Still there", go for a manual shot, so I do get occasionally a mix of both, but I do prefer the RAW to print from if I am doing enlargements...

However...

If I was given a camera where the JPEG files came in at the-same-or-better than what I am currently getting, in RAW, I cant see why I wouldnt use it more...

But again...

If I was going for an incredibly detailed shot, I would still use the RAW....
( such as Macro, etc.... )

I find some good humor here, relating to the wifes camera is why I asked this question. Very impressed with the pictures she pulls in as she is a dedicated jpeg shooter.
Thanks Dragon, Mark and Dave for the replys,

Another item I noticed over my 20D is the histogram shows better exposures, I am useing pretty much the same shooting habits, is this because of the dynamic range of the new senors?

Absolutely.....
There is a new "Software engine" with that sensor, it knows more than its predecessors, and has better tools at its disposal.

I remember a car advert from not-so-long-back where the main tag was "Some day all cars will be like this", you look back at the "Exiting new features" on that car, and they are pretty much "So what?.." by todays standard....
