Camera / Lens Transport

Hi
It might seem like an odd question..... When you transport your kit to a shoot do you have a lens attached to the camera or do you travel with everything individually packed in your bag or hard case. Smaller lenses maybe Ok but I was wondering about leaving a large lens (400/2.8 or 500/4) attached, could it damage the lens mount on the camera if the kit is lumped around?
How do you transport your kit, views appreciated

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

My most versatile lens is ALWAYS on the camera when not using a specific lens. In my case it happens to be a 24-105mm. When carrying in a bag, on the front seat of the car or just in the house always have a lens on your camera or you could miss the shot of the year be it a Golden Eagle, a goal, a sunset or something that might do for the front page of your local paper. The other lenses I put on as required. If I haven't got my kit with me I'll have my Fuji bridge camera. HTH.

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

If I'm using a 400mm IS 2.8L I will have that attached to the camera body along with another body attached to either a 70-200 IS 2.8L or a 135mm 2.0L lens transported in a Peli case.

If I'm shooting with a 300mm IS 2.8L I also have this attached to the body but use a smaller Peli case and carry a second body and lenses unattached.

Hope that makes sense

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

I never carry a body only - always have a lens on. Mostly it will be the 24-70 on the D700 and the 17-55 or the 18-200 on the D300. If I know that I'll be using the 70-200 I'll swap it onto the body before the shoot and from then on it will be carried over my shoulder or on the tripod or monopod. If I'm using two cameras one (usually the D700) will have the 70-200 and the other the standard zoom. I hardly ever transport a camera with the 70-200 in a bag, but when I do it is usually in a backpack style bag and is well supported vertically.

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

Hi Guys
Thanks for your advice. I will always transport kit with a lens attached - in my case a 25-70mm for starters. Also I will make sure they are securely packed to avoid any damage.
Many Thanks

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

I had been considering making an open topped box, well padded that would securely fasten to the front seat so I could carry my camera with the 400 attached when I went on my wanderings just so I get a quick shot off at a target of opportunity such as a Kestral on a telephone line. If I try to go to the boot for my camera they always fly off

Always have whatever lens I'm likely to be using attached, so if it's 500mm then that's what's attached

I always travel with camera in bag on the front seat (if alone!) - always seat belt the bag to prevent it moving around (and as a secondary, to prevent someone opening the door and half-inching it!)

Re: Camera / Lens Transport

At the moment I only have the one lens which is always attached, which I take almost everywhere I go. I do not have a special bag for it as such, but carry it in my rather large canvas handbag ( shoulder bag). At the bottom of the bag is a small folded light weight type picnic blanket that I often use when taking shots. On this I place the camera wrapped in a plain colored t-towel. Unless I have my camera out no one would even know I have one with me.
