Camera stolen from wedding

I was doing a wedding on Sunday at the South Lodge Hotel in Horsham, Sussex which is quite an upmarket venue. During the afternoon I put my D300 down and it was gone within 20 minutes even though we were never more than about 15-20 yards away. At first I thought maybe a member of staff had moved it but myself and Tony my assistant searched high and low to no avail.

The hotel was quite busy because of Father's Day but where we were was reasonably quiet apart from the wedding guests and there was an event where there was the unveiling of a new Ferrari. The hotel staff have been very good and it was reported to the police on Monday morning. Even worse than losing the camera (and grip) is that the lens on there is the 85mm f/1.4 from Lenesesforhire. The final straw is that there were 150-200 images from the wedding which obviously cannot be replaced.

I must admit it was a blow and I noticed that it affected my concentration as I had a minor lighting issue a short while later and was struggling to resolve it or come up with an alternative.

On the off chance that someone comes across some Nikon gear for sale in 'dodgy' circumstances the details are:

Nikon D300
Serial 6001880
Fitted with Lowepro neoprene strap

Nikon MB-D10
Serial 2001146
Fitted with Kirk QR plate

Nikon 85mm f/1.4
Serial 422617 (the lens is fitted with the metal hood but no lens cap)

Sandisk Extreme III 8gb card
Contains 150-200 wedding images in RAW

Re: Camera stolen from wedding

Absolute nightmare Colin !!!!

I must admit I've been concerned at some weddings leaving my gear in certain places, but been lucky to date.

The loss of images are the worst outcome though, as kit can be replaced.

If any Pixalo members see any of the above for sale on other forums, or on EBAY, please make an effort to ask serial numbers & get back to Colin

Re: Camera stolen from wedding

Ouch Colin, so sorry to hear about your loss, that has to be every serious photographer's worst nightmare.

I know this might sound crazy but a friend of mine does this so may be worth thinking about for the future. He takes a photo of a prepared print out which simply says: 'Ok, you've got my gear and I know you won't give it back. But please, the memory card is worth very little to you but is vital to my livelihood. Please at least do the decent thing and send that back to me at the following address, no questions asked..... ADDRESS.'

He works on the basis that there is even honour among thieves and that they might send him the card back so he wouldn't lose the photos. Heck, may not work at all but if there is a one in a hundred chance it might, it has to be worth thinking about.

I wasn't sure about putting a photo on the beginning of every memory card but maybe even a sticker inside the case or on the memory card? Would it work? Dunno but I like to think it just might.

Here's hoping someone gets a horrible attack of conscience and lets you have something back, that the insurance company play ball and replace everything or at the very least that the fleas of a thousand camels infest the ar** of the thief concerned!

Cheers,
Rob

Sorry to here about you losing all that stuff mate, im an old git and I still stand by "catch em and chop theyre b##### hands off." sorry if that offends some members but it is just my opinion. To which I am entitled. in a democratic country. and still within the rules of the forum, I think.
The only problem with putting your address on the cards is that its a bit of an advert really, "hey come on over to my house in a couple of weeks when the insurance claim has gone through, there will be loads of really expensive stuff, brand new in my house." ( note to self, stop bieng so cynical)

In the situation you were in I guess you'd feel pretty safe too. That must rub salt into the wound.

I have to ask though - if this happened on Sunday, why delay the reporting to police until the following day?

I wanted to make sure it wasn't handed in on the Sunday night, I doubt very much if the police would have come out so it was just a matter of recording the matter and getting a crime reference number.

It was with some trepidation that I contacted Aaduki who are my insurance company, not having made a claim before my main concern was how long the claim process would take and what pitfalls I might encounter. I have been dealing with Darryl Probert and he and Aaduki have been superb in every aspect of this, Darryl sent me the claim form via e-mail on Monday which was posted back to them to arrive Tuesday, Wednesday the claim was approved and Jacobs have been in touch today to arrange delivery (probably tomorrow) of my replacement equipment. Having heard the horror stories that some people have had when making claims with other insurance companies I cannot praise them enough for the handling of this unfortunate matter, I must admit I am a bit stunned with the speed it has been dealt with and their attitude towards my loss.

So absolute top marks to Aaduki and Darryl and I can highly recommend them for your camera insurance requirements.

Re: Camera stolen from wedding

At least that has taken the sting out of it Colin. I can appreciate that the images are the greastest loss, but if at least you can replace the gear without further hassle it is at least the one piece of good that has come out of the situation.

This will obviously make you change the way you shoot an event, otherwise you will be concenrating more on the kit than what you are doing. Maybe you'll have to use your assistant as a coat hanger as well as everything else!

Ludicrous old testament comments above aside my thoughts are much like everyone else's. Hard luck but hopefully the insurance will go some way to recovering your losses. It's a real shame for the wedding party that they've lost those images.

Re: Camera stolen from wedding

I hate hearing things like that happening.
I friend of mine had one of his lenses stolen in similar circumstances. He was shooting his Sisters wedding and set his lens down for just a minute or so, when he turned around it was gone. And it may sound silly, but true. a couple months later he was browsing his sister's wedding album that was full of snapshots guests and family took. In one of the photos he saw a picture of himself shooting. right behind him he saw his thief walking away with the lens.

I thought I would share that just to maybe show some hope. Good luck.

Re: Camera stolen from wedding

Colin,

Did the venue have any security surveillance that may have been of assistance?

I can only imagine how guttered you must feel not only having your precious camera stolen, but; also knowing that you have lost about 200 images. I hope that you get everything back and I hope the police prosecute them...

Good Luck.

Sorry to hear of your bad news. Unfortunately thieves are not conveniently identified by dress or class and sometimes there may be a pecking order based on fear but there certainly is no honour amonst them.

Colin: Felt sick on reading the above thread, knowing how much I treasure all my equipment, but on reading how Aaduki came across, I immediately went to their website and insured all my kit, no consolation I know, Someone said forgive them lord for they know not what they do ( maybe be misquoting), but these miscreant do, so may the wrath of the devil be upon them.

Dont trust no one!.....a few years ago after a wedding shoot I was putting my gear back in the car boot and my tripod was down to two legs at first I started laughing to myself and took another look yes my tripod had lost a leg...I went back to where I shot my last group picture alas no tripod leg there so off I went to the reception...surely somebody must have picked it up...but no nobody had....at the end of the evening a guy came up and asked whether I had lost a monopod...he had picked the leg up and put it in his car and forgoten about it untill he was leaving at the end of the evening when he went to put something in the boot of his car....so it was a happy ending this time.....but to have a camera stolen thats the pits!
