Cameras in cold climates

My son is going skiing in a couple of weeks with his new dslr and I'm sure I have read some posts about cold climates and condensation etc but he did a search and didnt find anything...

Are there any special precautions he should take for a) photo quality and b) camera protections in cold weather?

Many thanks

Re: Cameras in cold climates

Only things to watch are going from a warm (and maybe humid) to a cold environment and vice versa. If he can put his camera somewhere cold a couple of hours before he goes out it will help, otherwise he might have to wait until any condensation clears.

Batteries are best kept as close to the body as possible when not in use to keep them warm.

Why is he not a Pixalo member? He could ask for himself then. Ahhh - no. Silly me. He's a bloke, so Mum can do it.......

Putting it in a sealable plastic bag also keeps the potential condensation down

Re: Cameras in cold climates

This is an ongoing issue for anyone who does flyfishing, mostly because the best fish are caught in the dead of winter when you cant feel a damned thing. There was a bag brought out a few years ago aimed at the flyfishing market and I cant remember what it is called, what I do remember was that it was a clear dry bag with a special area designed to cling to the lens of the camera and it could not be seen. More often than not people use a drybag with silica gel packs which for the most part works ok. A common way of carrying this is either in a small backpack or a chestpack attached to the vest. Just for the record the vests are designed to have everything including the kitchen sink attached to them, so if you are looking for a vest for all occasions cabelas.com is a good place to start for ideas.
