Question Cannot copy IMG_0003 The parameter is incorrect.

Hey guys

I am trying to download pictures from Nikon D 70 to my computer through the USB cable. The computer is able to see the pictures on Nikon but I can neither open the picture (error: Can't read file header! Unknown file format!) nor can I copy these (error: Cannot copy IMG_ 0001. The parameter is incorrect.)
Does this mean that the memory card is corrupt or is it a question of changing some sort of settings on the camera?
Is there any way to slavage these images?
I hear about a software "PhotoRescue". Is that my only option?
Has anyone else run into a similar problem? What are the recommended paths of action?

Thanks very much,

Re: Cannot copy IMG_0003 The parameter is incorrect.

looks like the exif info of that file got lost somehow
what are you trying to open it with?
is it IrfanView by any chance? it happens a lot with that software.
also If you know what you are doing you can copy "complete headers" from the good files to the bad ones using a hex editing program but the files must be from the same source because the identification parts of the headers vary, but this is not easy.
is you're image is that important?

Is this the first time you have tried this?...
Has it worked before?
What "Software" are you using to view the photo's with?.

If you can see the pics in the camera view screen, or display them using a TV lead, they are still there, and you should be able to get them.

If this is the first time, and you have shot using Nikon RAW format, it is possible that if you are using the Windows pic viewer, it doesnt have the correct CODEC to view those photo's

I would suggest a quick trip here to Microsoft's own website to download the RAW viewer, which replaces the limited PIC viewer.
Download details: Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP
The RAW viewer has greater support for more File Formats, including Nikon and Canon RAW formats.

Using USB leads from camera's often require that windows has the right driver loaded to understand that particular camera, and often, windows does not have the right one.. or an outdated one...
Try visiting your camera's website and download the latest versions of software and drivers for your camera, see if that helps, or, get a multi-card reader... they are easier to use.
A generic "Multi-Card Reader" is cheep to buy, and uses a very simple generic driver to read the info, so less can go wrong.

If you are still having problems, there is a program called Recuva.
Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File Recovery - Home
This is from a company called Piriform, who make excellent programs, including CCleaner, its well recommended, and I can vouch that if those files are recoverable, it will find them...
I used it one time on a freshly formatted CF card, and it found everything from the last use of that card...

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Try to download on another computer and if this works then yes your settings just may be wrong on your computer, I sometimes get messages like this when I have shot in raw, my destop computer simply hates raw files, my laptops are not a problem, my destop is 9 years old now so I blame it on to that!

Re: Cannot copy IMG_0003 The parameter is incorrect.

Welcome to Pixalo shehla.arif

Lots of good advice there, but if you try a different memory card and get the same problem it will eliminate the card being the problem as it is very unlikelt that two cards will be faulty.

As has been said, it is more likely to be the software you are using.

Faststone Viewer is a free download that should be able to open the files from the D70 and has some very useful features too.

You guys are awesome!! Thanks for all the great tips. I'll look into these and will let you know what happens. And yes, those images are very imprtant --- from parts of the country I don't foresee going back to Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota ---

This suggests that it's nothing to do with software but is a hardware fault (reader, cable, USB port or card). Try copying the files with a card reader and even a different computer (which'll eliminate all except the card)

If it still fails, it is then that you'll need to try a rescue program (using card reader)
