I'm having trouble deleting D300 Raw files from my folders on my computer. I converted them to the .dng to go into cs2, but the nef files wont disappear, saying they are being used by another program.

anyone have any experience with this? I've rebooted and tried all the simple stuff...still not luck.

Im on windows xp.

Have you tried restarting your computer and then deleting the files. That normally sorts this problem out.

Press Ctl-Alt-Del and see if there are any applications or processes running in the background which might use a NEF file.

yea...tried all that. i've searched and found other people have this problem, but i can't find any solutions for it.

that's a bit weird tbh.

There's an app called FileMon which should tell you what app is locking your NEFs. Go into task man and kill that app.

Failing that, rebooting into safe mode should let you delete the files.

I'm assuming the files aren't shared on a LAN and being accessed elsewhere of course.

Try Right clicking the files


Look for properties

then attributes

See if they are write protected etc

Turn anything you find off

or go to a command prompt

navigate to the directory they are in

then type

attrib *.* -r -a -s -h /s

and hit return if it throws a wobbler do it again minus the /s on the end

that will remove any attributes that are hung

"I asked the Nikon helpline and they said it was the microsoft raw viewer"

"It sounds like the Nikon RAW Codec needs to be downloaded from Nikon and installed. The new version contains support for the D300"

I'd be tempted to convert to TIFF instead anyway, don't see the advantage of DNG, unless you can use it with camera RAW which I'm not aware that you can...

Markulous: the new codec from Nikon fixed the issue! thanks a million -- this was killing me!

it seems that the issue only happens when copying a .NEF file from my D300 in windows. I didn't have the issue with .NET files i just imported from a card.
