Canon 40D owner's guide book

I've recently moved up from a 400D to a 40D. The potential of the 40D is extensive and to get the best out of it a user needs to familiarise himself with all wide range of options which are available. It is a steep and rather daunting task !

The handbook from the box is OK but a good third party book written specifically for the 40D owner would be much better.

What recommendations can someone make from personal experience?

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

Sorry I don't have any book recommendations, but this weeks Amateur Photographer Magazine has a decent article on getting the most from a 40D... worth a read.

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

Sonsey's suggestion sounds like a good starting point. Books on specific cameras have a short run these days, as the models change so often, but general guidelines and tutorials on DSLRs apply to the 40D as to everything else.

There are some good tips in Pixalo's Tutorials forum, and there are a few on-line courses such as...

http://www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php

... which is a few years old but still relevant.

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

I got that this week and it is worth the read. My advice is just to play with it and familliarise yourself with the buttons, just choose something you want to do in the manual and go through it step by step, I sat for ages in my armchair doing that when I got my 20D after upgrading from the 300D, just to learn where the buttons were, it was easier going up to the 40D as it is pretty similar.
Have fun playing with your new toy, that's my advice

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

Well thanks for the advice and good wishes Sonsey, Silkstone and Whipspeed. I'll take it on board but,..... I'm still hankering after an informative and instructive tome to lead me by the hand through those parts of the operating systems which are neither intuitive nor apparent.

The processes on the 40D that can be accessed, utilised and adapted are mind boggling!

Maybe it's a question of slowly, slowly, catchee monkey?

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

That is a good reason for not taking a single review as being accurate, fair and unbiased. Objectivity is something we tend to expect from a pro review in a mag, but in these situations, you need a few to get a balanced view. If all reviews paint the same picture you can be fairly sure they are accurate, or at least have some common ground. One review, good or bad should not be relied on.

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

apparently the "Magic Lantern" guide is a good way to get to know your camera. I must say I dont have this book myself but will definately be ordering as for the 40D its not too expensive on Ebay.

Re: Canon 40D owner's guide book

I have the "Magic Lantern" guide for the 30d and I find it to be excellent and written so that even a simpleton like me can understand. I would recommend this to most people as a guide, but as stated earlier, playing with the camera is probably the way I have found it easiest to learn.
