Canon 580 EXII repair

This is both a question and an answer in one really but I thought I'd post it in case it helps anyone else.

I have three flashguns, a 580EXII, a 430EX and an MR14EX ringflash. They meet my needs perfectly but I had a minor accident with the 580 and it cracked around the hotshoe point making it nigh on impossible to use. I checked with a service centre and they said it would be 85 plus parts which they said would be about 35 so 120 in total. A lot but still a third of the price of a new one. Let me assure you however that it's is a total rip off but I am not going to name the centre as they're probably all alike.

A bit of research taught me that the part I needed was easily available and I ordered one from Hong Kong (genuine part, not that it mattered as there really isn't anything technical in it apart from a lead that is pre-soldered and ready with a plug) as the total cost including postage was just 26.

It arrived safely, albeit after two weeks but I expected that anyway. Just for fun, I timed myself doing the replacement. So, remove four screws, pull ut the lead plug. Plug in new one, put in its place and replace the four screws. Now, I'm a bit slow screwing (clean your minds at the back!) so the total time was just over two minutes. Yup, two whole minutes. Tested it out, works perfectly and the flashgun is like new.

Now, you always have choises in this life so here's yours if you face the same problem:

1 Buy a replacement part for 26, fit it in two minutes and get on with your life.
2 Pay 2,550 per hour service charge (that's 85 times 30, the number of times you could do this repair in one hour if you really wanted to!) but don't forget to add on the VAT!

It's probably the easiest repair job you could ever do so if you happen to get this problem, and lots do by the looks of the people I read about online, just grab a microscrewdriver (Phillips) and a replacement part. You'll be finished way shorter time than it took you to read this posting LOL.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Canon 580 EXII repair

Well Rob, as I am sure you are aware, the price would not have been to cover the 2 min repair but also to pay for the sales staff, administration, finance dept, general company overheads, shareholder profit etc.

As my career was in science and engineering, I have saved significant sums by repairing items from cars to washing machines, Hi Fi, TV's and even some camera kit. However, it is not always so easy to repair kit now and cameras are no exception. When I priced converting my EOS 20D to IR, I could buy the parts and do it myself but it only cost about 1/3 more for a specialist company to complete the job and take the responsibility. In this case some skill is involved and I reckon that I could have been quite good on the 4th or 5th upgrade so I felt that it was worth paying to have the camera modified. I no longer do everything and now select the jobs I am happy to do and now occassionally pay others for repairs.

Dave

Re: Canon 580 EXII repair

yep same thing happened to us but not with a camera........ heating element ont he cooker failed. ( after only just over a year). phoned up hotpoint ( thats the make) and they quoted us 76 for the part with labour over and above it......... so alan did a quick trip round google.......... two days later a non hot point compatible heating element arrived........
Cost:15 inc postage
Time: 15 minutes to fit ( he took slightly longer to screw than you did Rob- but in his defence he was on his knees whilst you would have been sitting down........)

upshot is that the original hot point lasted just over a year, the replacement cheapo compatible is still going strong 5 years later ........waits for oven to break down now she has said that...
