Canon ae-1

My father in law has just found his old canon ae-1.. I'm going to borrow it for a while, and would like to know if:
Anyone has any experience with one and got any tips for use? Which film would be best to use? Where would be best to get it developed?
The only time I've used film photography is with an aps compact, so I'm totally clueless!

Re: Canon ae-1

The AE-1 is a great camera (ask Jack)

If this is a first time of using film you won't go far wrong with a colour print film from Kodak or Fuji. Kodacolour II used to be a good one, but have not used film for so long now, I don't know what is around now. I bet all of the makers have different names for their stuff now. 100 or 200 ASA is the speed to look for.

Ilford used to be good for black and white, Agfa were another good make and there was a really good value make that totally escapes me at the moment

If you fancy transparencies, remenber you will need a projector and screen or a viewer to look at them. Kodachrome used to include processing and mounting in the price of the film, Ektachrome it was extra - although the film was cheaper too. Kodachrome 25 (ASA) was renowned for fine grain and vivid colours.

If you Google 'film processors' or printers, I'm sure you will find a lab.

Re: Canon ae-1

Get some nice B&W film: Ilford HP5 is good if it still exists, very forgiving of exposure errors.

Peak imaging do decent developing - or you could have a go yourself

Re: Canon ae-1

Canon ae-1 was and still is a great camera. I still have a canon a1 which i have had for over 25 years and it still works perfectly.

Ilford hp5 is very good film, with colour i used kodak professional, but i doubt whether they still make it, also problem was you had to keep it in the fridge, which took up a lot of space.

Hope you get a lot of enjoyment from your ae-1, it is a very good camera to start your photography with.

Best of luck, hope to see some of your results soon

I've only got it for a short while.. the father in law is trading it in.. Just thought I'd have a try using film while I've got a camera available!

Re: Canon ae-1

Still got my AE1-P (Black) and a bunch of lenses. For me this was a terrific cam. Quality from Canon. I really liked, and miss on my 400D the split screen focusing. Didn't need AF with this! I hope you enjoy film but remember it's not so forgiving as digital and a little more expensive on a regular basis.

DING! You called?

So I've got the digital kit stuff, but using a film SLR was / is a great experience. The AE-1 for me easily is capable of producing great pictures, but it really doesn't over-complicate anything. It's just a lot of fun to use. Damned tough as well, looks like it stood up to a bit in Angela's care (), but is still going strong and has produced some of my favourite images. Thus far I've shot exclusively mono Ilford HP5 and XP2 (colour processable BW film). Lenses are dirt cheap to so I picked up a 28mm 2.8 on ebay for about 30!

Here are a few shots I took with it:

And here's a pic of it

Don't think you'll go too far wrong, just expose to the left and think about each shot (duh! ). The advantage of shooting on mono film is that if you find some nice light, it will look nice in the end photo (providing you expose well), whereas on digital it can tend to 'flatten out' the contrast and end up with you having to mess around a lot
