"Canon does it first, Nikon does it right"

Hi everyone,

I was reading Fake Chuck Westfall's blog just now and came across this interesting entry

In it, I finding it interesting and disturbing at the same time that Canon still has problems with its DSLRs, being a company with so much experience. It should have by now gotten its act together.

What disturbs me honestly is that I am a Canon owner and am considering a possible upgrade to a 5DMkII. And moreover, I have read rave reviews about the 5DMkII.

Your thoughts?

IS fixing issues not getting its act together? I wonder what you would rather have them do?

I suppose that Nikon have never had any issues or released fiirmware updates

My thoughts are, that almost without exception and irrespective of the manufacturer, early adaptors will be the beta testers...

I feel your pain. Yes Nikon had the banding problem with the D200 and V long exposure hot spots on the D300, so they all get them and like everyone they took a long time to acknowledge the fault. Having said that the 1DIII has been around a long time and still no fix I think the problem is that a firmware fix can only do so much, the 1D has already had a recall for hardware but in the currrent climate it must be getting costly to keep doing that.
I am sure they will bounce back, it was no mean feat to get the pro market away from Nikon so never write them off. Issues aside the 5D and the 5D II are both incredible value for money compared to any manufacturer.

As Steve says, if you can't wait until the bugs are ironed out, you are always going to find problems. Same with new models of cars, motorbikes etc ..... leave it a year & let others find the problems for you

It has nothing to do with Canon or Nikon in the sense that it is how things are nowadays. Not too many companies actually put out FINISHED products anymore. Microsoft, Apple, Canon, Nikon, EA sports even Toyota, Honda all just ship out products on their timelines to meet certain sales deadlines. It is beat your competitors to get your product out first to capture the market and worry about bugs and problems with patches, updates and recalls. That is just how the world is nowadays, it is not just a Canon thing.

Re: "Canon does it first, Nikon does it right"

My day job is a sofware engineer working for a financial services company and the decision to release cameras or any other product with buggy software is purely down to risk. I'm sure the people at canikony will weigh up the risk / cost in sales of delaying the release of a product against the the risk that they will loose customers if the product is bug ridden.

If the cost of a potential bug can be measured (in financial services this can be very large, thousands or even millions of ) then the cost to mitigate the bug (extensive testing and bug fixing) is worth it.

The guys at canikony are not stupid, how many people have changed brands simply because a few shots are slightly out of focus or not quite exposed correctly.

Re: "Canon does it first, Nikon does it right"

That can be true to an extend. However, I am sure people who make these camera know all too well that though not ALL photographers will, may will stay with the brand they are accustomed to rather than switch. They know very well that there is a certain level of customer loyalty in a brand. Like apple users versus PC users, many Nikon users would not switch over to a Canon or a Sony easily and likewise for a Canon shooter. It is not so much that the products by these two companies are bad, which is the case for microsoft, but rather it would be so much nicer to have a product that you have invested time and money in to work as it should out of the box. With that said however, I am used to patches and updates and have accpeted them as part of life. Recalls on the other hand is a pain in the butt and I hate those.
