Canon EOS 400D
Hi,
Is there anybody who lives in the Birmingham area who can join up with me to help me solve a camera problem by comparing camera's by taking the same shots of objects. As i think my EOS 400d mite have a focusing error. The AF points seem to not lock onto objects the i want in focus. I have a 18-55 kit lens and a canon 70-300 IS USM lens. Cheers. |

Re: Canon EOS 400D
Have you tried to do a spot focus test.
Set you camera to use just the centre spot and put it on a tripod for a few shots. Alternatively take a few shots by focusing up and using the self timer with the camera sat on a table so your not touching it. It may be that the multi point focus is focusing on something other than your subject. My 40D is now set to spot focus all the time. Also remember that the 400 needs a little sharpening in whatever software you use due to the extra moire screen in front of the sensor.

Re: Canon EOS 400D
If you're stuck, ES, and can get yourself a little north to the peak district, you're welcome to compare with a 350D and 70-300mm IS. But it's defo worth trying C-Man's suggestions as a more likely solution
BTW, it's not the antialias screen that makes the pics soft - all digitals are soft (including my Sigma which has no screen in front of the sensor) |

Re: Canon EOS 400D
Markulous
Canon themselves told me about the softness on the 350D and 400D In their case it is the reason for a slight blur, funnily enough the 400D is supposed to be slightly more blurred than the 350D. I used an unsharp mask of about 200 and pixel size 0.5 as suggested by Canon and the difference is astonishing. I must also admit though that the 40D which I would imagine has the 400D sensor is nowhere near as bad. |

Re: Canon EOS 400D
For both the 350D and Sigma SD10 I use about the same sharpening (from RAW, obviously) but Sigma has no antialias filter and totally different sensor technology. Thinking about it, I sharpened my Fuji pics as well (rarely as only when I shot TIFF - not needed in JPG)

Re: Canon EOS 400D
Hello all,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I was told that it could be me loading my photo's into faststone image viewer and zooming into my images. C-MAN, Can you please explain what you meant by using an unsharp mask of about 200 and pixel size 0.5. Is this in the canon software or in some other software. Thanks Again To Everyone who replied to my Post. Cheers! Eyesociety, |

Re: Canon EOS 400D
Compared to compacts, DSLRs are far more subtle with their in-camera sharpening. Most shots benefit from some post-processing. This can mean that shots look a bit disappointing when viewed in an image viewer.
I use something called BreezeBrowser to look through my images. It's got the usual niceties like displaying EXIF data, focus points etc but the killer thing for me is the HQ mode, it has to be seen to be believed. When you first install it's turned off by default but you can toggle it from the menu or by pressing Ctrl-Q Try the free trial, you'll be amazed at the difference. HTH Paula |
