Canon mg5550 printer

Hi Graham
I got myself a new Canon mg5550 printer learning how to use it for printing photos and the cartridge's run out of ink, the cartridge's were flashing I took them out which tells you they are empty, done research on how to fill them ,I got some new inks to fill the cartridges, filled them then put them back into the printer, the lights are still flashing telling me they are empty but they are not.
I had new cartridges put them in everything shows ok have you any idea what would be rung with the ones that I refilled making the lights flash.
Thank you Graham.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

Hi
Dose it matter if the cartridge is the wrong colour as I have only one of the same colour and try it, still the same cartridge still flashes, been on YouTube for the canon mg5550 and carnt find how they reset the printer to get rid of the flashing light on the cartridges. The manual on the cd only says fit new cartridges, and the businesses don't give any info ???, there must be some one that knows how to do it.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

It is a well known issue with HP and Canon printers that they remember the serial number of the last 3 cartridges installed, so once you empty a cartridge you cannot put it back in the printer before at least 3 other cartridges have been used for the same functionality. Hence the reason in the video is that you need 4 cartridges of the same type in order to have enough cartridges to cycle through the cartridges before the printer forgets the first one and allows you to install it (this is what they mean by 'reset'). If you are mixing ink in the same cartridge you will probably screw up the print head (built into the cartridge on HP and Canon). Replacing ink in a cartridge requires that you need : either 4 cartridges or to refill the cartridge when it is low so that you do not get the empty warning.

I tried this once and find that with care and some research now you can buy aftermarket inks at such a good price you do not need to refill them. I do not know what is currently available in the UK, but Pelikan from Germany, Sigma from Czech republic are 2 sources that spring to mind of which I think there should be some outlets in the UK. You can also try 7 day shop as they sell a lot of useful aftermarket products.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

A serial number is always unique, otherwise manufacturers would not be able to have a reference to, say, batch manufacturing errors. I don't know the workings of Canon precisely but one would assume a serial number is just that and that no cartridge is ever the same as another. If you program a unit just using 32 binary bits (not an unreasonable number these days) you get 4,294,967,296. I would think that is more than enough to put a different number in each cartridge. So no, the numbers will not be the same.

I cannot quite follow your reasoning that "if you use the same serial number" that changing (re-inserting?) cartridges will result in a successful solution to your printing problem. Reasoning suggests that if you keep on putting the same serial number back in the printer, the printer will never advance its count of used cartridges and therefore you will be just chasing your tail ad infinitum. You must work with 4 different cartridges of each colour, and rotate the set [over time] so that the printer forgets the first number.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

Hi
I have got one set in printer, one spare set that's been refilled, and just paid for two new sets off eBay genuine canon mg5550 cartridges which gives me 4 sets should this solve my problem now, as its getting quite expensive now.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

I can imagine doing things this way it gets expensive. I would have waited until I had a suitable collection of sets through general use because unless you use your ink fairly quickly you could risk the heads getting dried up if they are left for too long. However... You will notice that there is a plastic tab over the head area (bottom of cartridge) with warnings to be careful not to touch it. Do not disturb it until needed, unless absolutely necessary.

When the cartridges become empty store them in a sealed plastic bag in their transport holders (use the old plastic cover for the heads - do not use sellotape or similar). You can refill the cartridges before or after storing them but better before storage so that the chance of drying out is prevented, and do not forget to cover the heads. Keeping the cartridges sealed this way will be the best way to preserve them for further use - heads dry out very quickly and often render the cartridge unserviceable, certainly for photography !!!! Follow directions with the packaging with regard to storage temperature etc..

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

The serial number will be on the label usually on the bottom of the printer.

Re: Canon mg5550 printer

Hi Graham
There is no label on the bottom of the printer, one very small number bottom of the printer but it dose not say serial number. Don't know whether you can help me I've tried everything that Grease spot has put on hear and it don't work, the 4 lots of cartridges to do it has cost more than the printer, looked on utube and tried some of them, (no good ) . I cannot get in touch with canon without the serial number.
