Car shows

I have been to two vintage car shows recently and the cars have been fabulous....BUT, it's the people!!!!! Why are the cars parked so close together making a shot of just one of them nearly impossible, when the rest of the field is empty; Why do the owners and and restorers always have a picnic at the rear of the car and why when you are contorting in front of the car always have to contend with some lemon standing in front of you eating a burger!!!!! I know I am being selfish and starting to sound like Victor Meldrew but I really don't believe it!!!!!

That is so true. Be it vintage cars, rally cars or historic military vehicles.

Re: Car shows

The last car show I went to the owners had a tent put up and would group up to the center or near to that groups cars. I can't blame them for wanting to keep an eye on things when the shows are for free,,what free,,go figure. One thing that kept me ahppy was to have ytwo cameras. A long telephoto and a very wide angle. I would keep an eye on a car I wanted a picture of and rip a shot with the telephoto when people backed off. The wide angle for me anyway doesn't need a worry, I love distorted cars and will get close for the picture then photoshop out what happens to nip a corner. I'm sure you know all that and have a few walk arounds you could share just as well.

Re: Car shows

Ive been to quite a few and almost managed to sell my car there as well yet i had 30 lookers and no takers. And ive still got the dam thing anyway thats another story.
Ive managed to pick my angle and spot with out to much trouble and fairly close cropping and PP can usually loose the burger munchers. I usually try and make conversation with the owner if they are there (hoping they may like a print of their heap). I did manage to get a owner of a Aston Martin DBS interested but he never came back. Another good day out is the Custom and classic car show at the NEC usually early november time i think.

Re: Car shows

Would it be possible to try that trick where you take several shots from the same fixed point, using a tripod, then layer them together? As long as you don't move the camera between shots, and wait till the positioning of the onlookers has changed between each shot, then use each one as a new layer over the base layer. As you erase part or whole of something (in this case a person), in one layer, exactly the same thing is revealed in the layer beneath, only in that one, nobody happened to be standing on that particular spot. Take enough shots and you may be left, after merging the layers down, with the uninhabited shot you want.

A friend told me about this technique when I couldn't get a shot of the palm house at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and it worked for me. I took a dozen shots and used 7 of them. Admittedly the people in the shot you want may be more densely packed but worth a try maybe?

NB, I would have posted the one I took, but a hard drive crash a couple of months ago took 70% of all the stuff I'd taken in the last two years so now I have more redundant backups than CTU.

Re: Car shows

That's a great tip pjiffy. I'll have to try that next time. Sorry to hear of your crash, which reminds me to make another backup myself.
