cf card not recognised

My OH just picked up a second hand 1Ds MKIII, now its been working fine all week no issues, but today he put a card he hadnt used before in it, it was s sandisk Extreme III 4 gb. and it is saying no card.
Now i KNOW this card works fine,.... why? cos i used it a wee while ago at a wedding and it still had the images on it, i put it in my camera and it worked no problem. I formatted et and put it back in the 1Ds and still saying no card., all other cards he has tried works fine just not that one... anyone got any ideas?

Re: cf card not recognised

If the 1D is handling other cards OK then you could try doing a full format on a Windows machine, not a quick format, which is what is usually offered. This will take a while but will reset the partition table as well as write out the while disk. A quick format is usually what is done by the camera, and it can be that the 1D is more fussy about having a full and correctly formatted disk than the 5D. I have had this issue with a Nikon whereby the Nikon did not write out a full disk and returned a fault after x number of pics. It may be that similar card handling software is used in the 1D. You will not lose anything by trying this. If the card is accepted in the 1D afterwards then use the 1D to format it again.

It's also worth having a close inspection of the pins in the camera with a magnifying glass to see that they are all the same length and one hasn't bee pushed back a little bit, or that the contact in the card has been pushed back, but as all your other cards work I doubt this is the problem.

Re: cf card not recognised

On top of what Graham has said, does the camera accept other cards? If it is just that one that the issue will be isolated to that specific card.

You say that you have used it before. If you formatted it in your 5d it might be that his camera does not like the 5D formatting.

Re: cf card not recognised

hmm im loath to try a format on the computer as all the posts i have read have said under no circumstances format a memory card on a computer. the card was formatted on my 7D, works fine in my 5 D used it for a wedding a few months ago 7D read the content and formatted it. Its definately not the pins. the other cards he is using have all been used on his 1d and my 7d
its totally bizarre

Hi Fiona, are you using both card slots and are the cards the same speed?

Re: cf card not recognised

Hi Fiona, I have a 1Ds111 and 2 Sandisk 4 gb extreme plus several Lexar high speed cards, I have found that the cards need to be formatted in the 1Ds3 to work correctly.
Is the camera set up to record to both cards simultaneously, or to the SD only when the CF is full? If it is to both at the same time you do need the second card in, both cards need to be formatted at the same time ( one after the other) otherwise the CF may be empty but the SD can be full.
I know you probably already know that but sometimes it is the obvious that we miss.
Charles.

I always format the card in the camera in which it is to be used. To do otherwise is risking problems.

Re: cf card not recognised

he is only using one slot the CF slot, the camera is set up to record only the one slot, he cant use the 1dsmkIII to format the card if its not recognising the card in the first place.

He puts the card in..... the camera says " no card "
if the camera cant see the card it cant do anything to it..... it works absolutely fine with the rest of the cards which where all used in all the other cameras in exactly the same way this one was. this card works fine in all the other cameras

This is why Graham suggested formatting the card in a PC.

I've got the answer Fi.

Don't use that card in that camera.

Re: cf card not recognised

Personally, I regularly format CF cards on my computer with absolutely no problems whatsoever! Though I'll add that it has to be the right format

Reading posts on forums, there do seem to be occasional difficulties with using some cards across different cameras - theories suggest it's the camera format that is used which are incompatible (possibly the support files). I'd format on a computer making sure I conformed to the correct FAT and then re-format on the camera which'll initialise and add any necessary files

I've also come across certain brands of cards (and sometimes specific cards within a brand) not working with some cameras.

Re: cf card not recognised

The reason I only format in the camera is because that is what Canon recommend; its in the handbook. My guess is that there are occasional problems with some camera/card combinations. The most likely reason for the camera not recognising the card is a connection problem between the card and camera. While there could be a problem with either he card or camera, as each works in other circumstances, it may be just an unlucky combination. Assuming that it is not possible to prove exactly what the cause is, I suggest keeping this card for another camera where it works and using a different card for the 1D3. While it is inconvenient, it is better than getting stuck with not being able to take photographs.
