Coastal shots

bit of advice please guys

mid week next week i am planning on taking the dogs to the coast, and dont want to pass up the opportunity of taking some shots of the ocean ( fingers crossed it will be raining so the beach will be empty ), just wondering if its worth picking up an filters incase its really sunny, just to knock out some glare off the water...

If the answers yes, what u reccomend?

Adrian

Re: Coastal shots

To reduce glare you need a circular polarising filter. Bcause these are dark by their very nature you do losse a couple of stop of speed. But on the plus side they can also be used a neutral density filter as well.

The other thing they do well is to darken blue skies but this efect works best when the picture is taken at 90 degrees to th eposition of the sun.

If you do get one you will find it can be quit euseful

Re: Coastal shots

Personally, I probably wouldn't use one unless it was lovely blue skies with fluffy clouds (and, as AQ suggests, pic is at 90 degrees to sun) for the saturated blue, rather than reduced glare. Especially as you lose two stops. BUT it won't harm to have one handy and it'll definitely come in useful one day, I guarantee!

As a small note, make sure that if you do use one that you take off polarised sunglasses!

Re: Coastal shots

So following on from that if you are using a circular filter thingie should you adjust aperture or speed to compensate??

Camera always reads the light entering - thingy (to give it's correct name! ) will reduce light entering but camera will only receive the lower light and set accordingly. So, no, you don't need to do a thing for the thingy!

Re: Coastal shots

I use a polariser at times they can be very good but do be aware you can over do it a bit and make things have no reflections at all. You can also use two together as a variable neutral density filter.

Re: Coastal shots

thanks guys, unfortunately due to a £500.00+ dental bill on Monday ( 1st day of the holidays ) i didn't have the funds for any filters but i think the shot came out nicely

anyways so not to deviate, heres one of the shots from the little costal day out

just love the grin on her face...lol, day out enjoyed by all :d

liked this one, bit of editing in lightroom, think i need to tone down the vignetting abit more..i know the horizons off but i like that about the shot..

I Know its abit of a holiday snap, but i like it Best go read the week and a half of posts i need to catch up on..lol
