Concerned and wondering

Hi all
I was just wondering after reading something on another site what your thoughts are on putting pics of your children (if you have any) on sites like this. Is there need for concern that some 'less than desirable person' may download them.
I guess its not a huge concern because photographers display pictures of children on their sites (obviously with the permission of the parents you would hope) and I was able to download a photo from a particular photographers site with the save as button easily.
What steps can be taken to monitor those who download pictures of yours. Obviously on a site like this it helps that others can 'play around' with your pics if you want help with editing etc.
I'm just curious as to others opinions. I know from reading other posts that photo protection is hard on the internet.....my pics aren't that good that someone would want to copy them but I wouldn't want my children being a target from some nut!

Re: Concerned and wondering

I'll make no claims to either official nor definitive explanation, but uploaded images can be downloaded by anyone (whatever anyone suggests to prevent it). Having said that, it won't happen on Pixalo as we don't allow provocative images of children and monitor the Gallery and Forums to ensure this is the case

The only suggestion I'd add is to always ensure you place no private information anywhere on the internet. As a final point, whilst there have been incidents over the years (which attract enormous press attention) the vast proportion of problems have been caused by individuals known to the children

Re: Concerned and wondering

to be perfectly honest i dont have a problem with putting photos of my son on the internet. i have some here and on various other forums, why am I nor worried? cos none of these images are in any way provocative.
For an image of a child to appeal to these type of "people" then i would imagine it would have to have some sort of provocative element to it. I did have words with someone on another forum once for posting shots of a 13 yr old in what was IMO clearly "adult" type poses, ok they were not showing anything but to some indesirables it clearly would have been provocative.
As Mark has said nothing is save and as long as there is no identifying information in the exif etc then i dont honestly see the problem. I am more concerned with protecting my son than his photograph.

Re: Concerned and wondering

I totally agree with Fiona. I also think that the whole country is becoming unnecessarily paranoid about pictures of children. Provided they are not identifiable and are not provocative I see no reason to worry. It would be a great pity if we get to the state where everyone is scared to post any pictures.

My daughter is 21 now but we still have many holiday pictures we took when she was under 5 running around topless. These went through a commercial procesing lab with no problem would that be the same now ?

I still remember my reaction of horror when that school recently felt it had to replace the faces of the children with smilies on the school web site. And then the head claimed that they had to do it to "protect" the children.

As Mark said children are at much more risk from their family members than they ever are from strangers.

Re: Concerned and wondering

I agree with what's been said, but am a bit confused. What do you mean by "personal" or "identifying" information that should not be disclosed e.g. child's name is already identifiable where the (parent) photographer's full name is openly visible

Re: Concerned and wondering

there are options to put more than a name in the metadata tho Charlotte, some people even go as far as putting their address in it for some unknown reason!

Re: Concerned and wondering

Agree with Fi, I always ask the parents of anyone under 16 if they are on my site, but they have all been happy for them to be on it.

Now the 6ft size 8 blonde client now she might need protecting considering the amount of people who have asked if shes single!

Re: Concerned and wondering

well you've put my mind at ease - I didn't really have any reservations about this site but it was a comment on another site that got me thinking.
As you say they are just photos - the real danger is likely to be closer to home.
Cheers
