concert gear

i have just been to another concert in Krakow and taken shots and there are absolutley rubbish i think maybe one is ok got to check this as i might be wrong. i was just wondering if anybody knows anything about concert shots and what gear they would advise i have just come across a website that recommends no flash and iso of at least 800 (light depending) with 1/125 shutter speed also recommends using lens's with f2.8.

can anybody advise me on some lens's that will do this job as i wouldnt mind getting a good shot next time i go.

my kit consists of
canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
canon 75-300mm f4-5.6
sigma 105mm macro f2.8 (would it be possible to use this or...)

i am looking at getting a nift y fifty i know that will be ok but its on 50mm so i think i need something in the middle like a prime 85mm???

thanks for taking the time to read and offer advise

Aidey

Re: concert gear

There was an excellent tutorial on here somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment.

I'll have another look when I get home.

Re: concert gear

I use a 50mmF1.4 but now i have bought a 5D for shooting bands i might need an 85F1.8 but i am always well above ISO 800 usually at ISO3200, the stuff i shoot i can get close so the 50mm my be ok, here's my last shots with 1Dmk1 and 50mm Gary Clarke : photos : The Idle Hands @ The Junction- powered by SmugMug most at iso1600

Re: concert gear

I don't remember seeing such a tutorial Graham + a search turned up nothing.

Viking Photography is the one to ask; but basically you need a fast lens (wide aperture, e.g. f/1.4 - 2.8) - concerts generally being low light scenarios - so that you can get a reasonably fast shutter speed (to capture the action) + manage with the highest ISO your camera will comfortably handle.

A nifty fifty is always handy to have around, as is an 85mm prime lens. But for concerts - and I see you don't have a 2nd body - you don't want to be messing around changing lenses, so you might want to think about a zoom lens, although a fast zoom will cost you.

Re: concert gear

The best lenses for no flash photography are always the f1.2, f1.4, f2, f2.8 which are expensive personly I would use a 18-200mm or wider and shorter, depends on where you are allowed to stand.
